WOI Tower
The WOI Tower (also called NYT Broadcast Holdings Tower, for WHO-TV's former owner) is a high guy-wired mast located in Alleman, Iowa, United States, north of the Des Moines urban area, at . It carries not only the signal of ABC affiliate WOI-TV (channel 5), but also NBC affiliate WHO-TV (channel 13), and PBS member station KDIN (channel 11) as well as NPR member station WOI-FM (90.1). The structure is one of the very few masts to have elevators. WOI-DT (channel 5) is a television station licensed to Ames, Iowa, United States, serving the Des Moines area as an affiliate of ABC. It is owned by Tegna Inc. alongside CW affiliate KCWI-TV (channel 23), also licensed to Ames. Both stations share studios on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, while WOI-DT's transmitter is located in Alleman, Iowa. WOI-FM (90.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to Ames, Iowa, serving the greater Ames/Des Moines area. The station is owned by Iowa State University. WOI-FM is an affiliate of Iowa Public Radio, and carries IPR's "News and Studio One" service—a mix of National Public Radio news programming and adult alternative music. WOI-FM first hit the airwaves on December 1, 1949. It was originally a full-time simulcast of WOI-AM. The two stations went their separate ways in the 1960s. Until the formation of Iowa Public Radio in 2004, WOI-FM was the flagship station for a mini-network of FM stations in central Iowa, including KWOI in Carroll and KTPR in Fort Dodge. WHO-DT (channel 13) is a television station in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, affiliated with NBC and owned by Nexstar Media Group. The station's studios are located on Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines, and its transmitter is located in Alleman, Iowa. Although WHO-DT's call letters sound like "who" if pronounced as a word, the station is never referred to in that manner; it is always mentioned on air as "W-H-O." History WHO-TV signed on the air on April 15, 1954, as the third television station in Des Moines, after WOI-TV (channel 5) and KGTV (channel 17).
