WOHS (1390 AM) is a commercial radio station in Shelby, North Carolina. It is owned by KTC Broadcasting and broadcasts an oldies radio format, featuring beach music. Licensed to Cherryville, North Carolina, United States, the station is currently owned by Calvin Hastings, through licensee KTC Broadcasting, Inc. WBT (1110 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station serving the Charlotte metropolitan area, including parts of North Carolina and South Carolina. First licensed on March 18, 1922, it is one of America's first radio stations. The station airs a news/talk radio format simulcast on WBT-FM (99.3) and the HD2 digital subchannel of co-owned WLNK. Shelby, North Carolina
Shelby is a city in and the county seat of Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States. It lies near the western edge of the Charlotte combined statistical area. The population was 20,323 at the 2010 census. History The area was originally inhabited by Catawba and Cherokee peoples and was later settled between around 1760. The city was chartered in 1843 and named after Colonel Isaac Shelby, a hero of the battle of Kings Mountain (1780) during the American Revolution. Shelby was agricultural until the railways in the 1870s stimulated Shelby's development. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram.
