WNEX-TV
WNEX-TV, known as WETV from 1953 to 1954 and WOKA in May 1955, was a television station on channel 47 in Macon, Georgia, United States. It was the first station on the air in Macon and held an affiliation with NBC throughout its existence; it initially was also affiliated with American Broadcasting Company, ABC. The station's studios and transmitter were located along Pio Nono Avenue. While it was first to air in Middle Georgia, the presence of a VHF television station, WMAZ-TV, severely hurt its economic viability at a time when UHF stations could not be received in all homes. In 1955, it was sold and closed after just a month under new ownership in evident financial distress. WMAZ-TV (channel 13) is a television station in Macon, Georgia, United States, affiliated with CBS and The CW Plus. The station is owned by Tegna Inc., and maintains studios on Gray Highway on the northeast side of Macon; its transmitter is located on GA 87/US 23/ 129 ALT (Golden Isles Highway) along the Twiggs–Bibb county line. History The station first signed on the air on September 27, 1953. It was the second TV station in Macon. WETV, later WNEX-TV and WOKA (channel 47), had begun operation on August 25, 1953, co-owned by WBML (1240 AM) and WNEX (1400 AM). However, in the 1950s, few people had TVs that received UHF channels; after being sold while indebted, it ended operations in May 1955. WDDO (1240 AM)
WDDO was an AM radio station in Macon, Georgia, United States. It broadcast from 1940 to 2016 and was last owned by Cumulus Media and programmed with a gospel music format. WBML went on the air at 1420 kHz in October 1940, moving to 1240 kHz less than a year later. It was one of Macon's heritage radio stations, switching to country music in 1976. A swap between WBML and WDDO, then at 900 kHz, in 1978 brought that station's Black-oriented programming to the 1240 frequency, where it could broadcast at night. The station went off the air for good in January 2016 after thieves stole copper wire from its transmitter facility. Macon ( ), officially Macon–Bibb County, is a consolidated city-county in the U.S. state of Georgia. Situated near the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, it is located southeast of Atlanta and lies near the geographic center of the state of Georgia—hence the city's nickname, "The Heart of Georgia". The All-Channel Receiver Act of 1962 (ACRA) (), commonly known as the All-Channels Act, was passed by the United States Congress in 1961, to allow the Federal Communications Commission to require that all television set manufacturers must include UHF tuners, so that new UHF-band TV stations (then channels 14 to 83) could be received by the public. This was a problem at the time since most affiliated stations of the Big Three television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) were well-established on VHF, while many local-only stations on UHF were struggling for survival. WMGT-TV's studios are located on Poplar Street in downtown Macon, and its transmitter is located on SR 87/ US 23/ US 129 ALT (Golden Isles Highway) along the Bibb– Twiggs county line. History The station first signed on the air on September 30, 1968, as WCWB-TV. It was the first commercial television station to start up in the Macon market since CBS affiliate WMAZ-TV (channel 13) debuted on September 27, 1953, fifteen years and three days earlier.
