WMQA-FM (95.9 FM, "95.9 The Island") is an American FM radio station broadcasting an adult contemporary format. Licensed to Minocqua, Wisconsin, the station began broadcasting in 1975. The station features news from FOX Radio Networks and programming from Westwood One. WMQA-FM uses Westwood One's Adult Contemporary format outside of the live and local morning show. With a 22,000-watt signal, the station covers a portion of northwestern Wisconsin and some of the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including the Wisconsin cities of Minocqua, Rhinelander, Lac du Flambeau, Tomahawk, and Eagle River. Minocqua, Wisconsin
Minocqua ( oj, Minwaakwaa) is a town in northwestern Oneida County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,388 as of 2017. The census-designated place of Minocqua and the unincorporated community of Rantz are both located in the town. Minocqua is commonly referred to as "The Island City." History Minocqua was officially organized in the year 1889. Although there are varying explanations regarding the meaning of the word "Minocqua", most credit its origin to the Island's first inhabitants, the Ojibwe. The town Minocqua is named after, "Ninocqua", the Ojibwe name that is defined as "noon-day-rest". In the late 1800s, Minocqua was a logging town. Minocqua Clawson was the first child born in the town. Tomahawk, Wisconsin
Tomahawk is a city in Lincoln County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,346 at the 2010 census. The city is located to the northeast of the Town of Tomahawk and is not contiguous with it. History Before 1837, the land where Tomahawk is now situated belonged to the Ojibwe, who traded actively with fur traders such as the American Fur Company and the Northwest Company. After the 1837 cession, the practical situation changed only slightly: the federal survey teams had not arrived yet, logging activity was still light, and Ojibwe continued to actively occupy the general area. There was a village just north of the modern Tomahawk, in the vicinity of modern Bradley, and a village on Skanawan Creek. WRJO (94.5 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station broadcasting a classic hits radio format, music format. Licensed to Eagle River, Wisconsin, United States. The station is currently owned by Heartland Communications Group LLC. History The station went on the air in 1971 as WERL-FM. On 1985-04-05, the station changed its call sign to the current WRJO. The WERL call sign remains on its AM station at 950 kHz. WERL was a reference to "Werl (as in "Whirl")-Wide Radio", taken from its early logo in the 1960s and 70s. Before the oldies format, WRJO held a country music format with the nickname "Eagle Country". Kemal Amin "Casey" Kasem (April 27, 1932 – June 15, 2014) was an American disc jockey, actor, and radio personality, who created and hosted several radio countdown programs, notably '' American Top 40''. He was the first actor to voice Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the ''Scooby-Doo'' franchise (1969 to 1997 and 2002 to 2009) and as Dick Grayson/Robin in ''Super Friends'' (1973–1985). Middle of the road (also known by its acronym MOR) is a commercial radio format and popular music genre. Music associated with this term is strongly melodic and uses techniques of vocal harmony and light orchestral arrangements. The format was eventually rebranded as soft adult contemporary.
