WMOG (910 AM) is a radio station broadcasting an Urban Gospel format. Licensed to Meridian, Mississippi, United States, the station is owned by Clay Holladay, through licensee Mississippi Broadcasters. History The station first went on the air as WCOC in 1927 from Columbus, Mississippi and was owned by the Crystal Oil Company. It was moved to Meridian in 1929. As WOKK, the station had a country format until 1983 when it swapped with WALT to FM 97.3 MHz. WALT carried a Hot AC format until 1985, when the format changed to Urban Contemporary and its moniker became T-91 and it broadcast in AM Stereo. Meridian is the List of municipalities in Mississippi, seventh largest city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, with a population of 41,148 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census and an estimated population in 2018 of 36,347. Urban Contemporary
Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, hip hop, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of Black genres such as R&B, pop-rap, quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, hip hop, Latin music such as Latin pop, Chicano R&B and Chicano rap, and Caribbean music such as reggae and soca. Urban contemporary was developed through the characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. However, widespread AM broadcasting was not established until the 1920s, following the development of vacuum tube receivers and transmitters.
