WLKE (93.5 FM) is an American, Christian radio station serving Altoona, Pennsylvania, from Gallitzin, its city of license. WLKE operates at an effective radiated power of 1,250 Watts. The station is owned by Educational Media Foundation. History The groundwork for WHPA actually was laid in the late 1980s, when a construction permit to build a new FM station was issued to William C. Bland, the owner of Bland Radio Group, Inc., which was then the licensee of WNCC in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The station was assigned the frequency of 94.3, a class A power output of 3,000 watts and the call letters WRHB-FM. However, this station would never sign on the air under Bland's ownership. WNCC was turned over to a bankruptcy receiver (local attorney Mark Gregg) in 1990, forcing its sale to J. Richard Lee (dba Eagle Radio, Inc.) in 1992. Northern Cambria is a borough in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census. History The borough of Northern Cambria was incorporated on January 1, 2000. It was formed from the merger of two smaller municipalities, Barnesboro and Spangler. The merger proposal was taken to residents in the 1997 election, passing in Spangler 410-243 and in Barnesboro 466-324. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early-to-middle 19th century. The presence of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River allowed loggers to move their harvest downstream. Small farms developed, but the area changed in the 1890s when mining of the extensive bituminous coal fields in the area became the dominant industry. Altoona Curve
The Altoona Curve are a Minor League Baseball team based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, named after nearby Horseshoe Curve (but also alluding to the curveball, a type of pitch). The team plays in the Eastern League and is the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Curve play in Peoples Natural Gas Field, located in Altoona; it was opened in 1999 and seats 7,210 people. WFBG (1290 AM) is a news/talk radio station broadcasting in Altoona, Pennsylvania. WFBG originally broadcast on the frequency of 1310 kilohertz and was known as "The Voice of the Alleghenies." It signed on in 1924, at 100 watts. Its call letters stood for the name of the station's founder, William F. B. Gable, owner of Gable's department store in Altoona. It moved to 1290 on the dial, and broadcast at 5000 watts daytime, 1000 watts at night. It was a very influential and top rated station, the biggest station between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In the 1960s, the Morning Mayor, as he was called, was Big John Riley, working from 6 to 10am. Dick Richards followed from 10a to 3p. Dan Resh did the 3p to 7p shift and Dick DiAndrea owned the night from 7p to midnight. DiAndrea also hosted a very popular Bandstand program on WFBG-TV.
