WKBZ is a news/talk radio station in Muskegon, Michigan on the frequency of 1090 AM owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. History The original WKBZ operated in Ludington, Michigan from 1926 to 1934. It was moved to Muskegon, Michigan in 1934. In 1947 WMUS began operations and became the second radio station serving Muskegon, after the original WKBZ (today's WGVS); it began as a general-interest independent variety station featuring Associated Press newscasts. WGVS (AM)
WSMZ (850 kHz) is an AM radio station in Muskegon, Michigan. History Between 1926 and 1999, this station was the original WKBZ, the oldest radio station in Muskegon. It was founded in Ludington, Michigan, by Karl L. Ashbacker, and broadcast on 1170 kHz until 1927, 1500 kHz until 1941, and 1490 kHz until 1947. The station relocated to Muskegon in 1934, establishing studios in the Continental Hotel. (The Ashbackers later built another station in Ludington, starting up WKLA in 1944.) The Ashbackers owned WKBZ until December 1951, when Arch Shawd acquired the Ashbacker Radio Company. WKBZ was a radio station on 1520 kHz in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. It broadcast between 1963 and 2001 and was last owned by WLC Broadcasting. History The construction permit for WKJR, a daytime-only station on 1520, was obtained on September 27, 1962. The permit was owned by William and William Eugene Kuiper, doing business as the Muskegon Heights Broadcasting Company. The station hit the air in February 1963 and increased its daytime power to 10,000 watts in 1971. The station suffered a humorous accident in 1975 when a field mouse crawled into the transmitter site, shorting out a transformer and keeping the station off the air for 45 minutes during its broadcast of a high school basketball game. WMUS (107.9 FM, "107 MUS") is a radio station broadcasting a country music format in Muskegon, Michigan. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. History 107.9 FM signed on originally around 1988 as WKBZ-FM. Magic 108 Acknowledging the need for an urban oriented radio station in west Michigan, in 1993, the station evolved into WMHG ("Magic 108"), playing urban contemporary music. It airs Westwood One's Good Time Oldies format and can be heard in a very small area around Ludington and Scottville. Muskegon County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of 2020, the population was 175,824. The county seat is Muskegon.
