Schenectady () is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat. WGNT (channel 27) is a television station licensed to Portsmouth, Virginia, United States, serving the Hampton Roads area as an affiliate of The CW. It is owned by the E. W. Scripps Company alongside Norfolk-licensed CBS affiliate WTKR (channel 3). Both stations share studios on Boush Street in downtown Norfolk, while WGNT's transmitter is located in Suffolk, Virginia. "Woody" Erdman (April 16, 1926, Ashland, Pennsylvania – February 10, 1997, Greensboro, North Carolina) was an American sportscaster, television producer, and businessman who served as chairman of Trans-National Communications, International Trade & Commerce Corporation and Boston Celtics. Ellis Erdman was a combat veteran of World War II, having served with the US Army Air Corps from 1944 to the V-J Day. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. Rural Radio Network
The Rural Radio Network (RRN) was an interconnected group of six commercial FM broadcasting, FM radio stations spread across upstate New York and operated from Ithaca, New York -- the first all-radio, no-wireline network in the world. It began operation in 1948 as an innovative Broadcasting, broadcast service to the farm, agricultural community, but competition from television—and a lack of affordable, well-performing FM receivers—caused the founders' original business plan to fail.
