WJFK (AM)
WJFK (1580 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting a sports gambling radio format. Licensed to Morningside, Maryland, and serving the Washington metropolitan area, the station is owned by Audacy, Inc. The radio studios are in Southeast DC in the Navy Yard neighborhood. Programming is supplied by the co-owned BetQL Audio Network and CBS Sports Radio. By day, WJFK is powered at 50,000 watts, the maximum for commercial AM stations. Because 1580 AM is a Canadian clear channel frequency, WJFK must greatly reduce power at night to 270 watts, when radio waves travel farther. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. A tower array is an arrangement of multiple radio towers which are mast radiators in a phased array. They were originally developed as ground-based tracking radars. Tower arrays can consist of free-standing or guyed towers or a mix of them. Tower arrays are used to constitute a directional antenna of a mediumwave or longwave radio station.
