WIS 102
State Trunk Highway 102 (often called Highway 102, STH-102 or WIS 102) is a state highway in Taylor and Price counties in north central Wisconsin, United States, that runs from Wisconsin Highway 13 (WIS 13) north of Chelsea northeast to Wisconsin Highway 86 (WIS 86) in Spirit. The highway is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Route description WIS 102 begins at a junction with WIS 13 in Taylor County, north of the community of Chelsea. From here, the highway runs east through the town of Westboro. It then enters the town of Rib Lake and turns to the northeast toward the village of Rib Lake. The highway passes through the village, intersecting County Highway D before running along the north shore of Rib Lake. After leaving the village to the east, WIS 102 meets County Highway C before turning to the north. Rib Lake is a village in Taylor County, Wisconsin, United States located at the junction of Wisconsin Highway 102 and Taylor County Highway D. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. The village is completely surrounded by the Town of Rib Lake. History In 1881, J. J. Kennedy hauled sawmill machinery with oxen from the railroad at Chelsea to the bank of Rib Lake and built a sawmill called the Rib Lake Lumber Company. The next year a railroad spur was built to the mill from the Wisconsin Central Railway at Chelsea. The community was originally called Kennedy Mills. The original mill burned in about a year, (and possibly burned again in 1898) and was destroyed by another fire on July 23, 1914. In 1891, Fayette Shaw started a tannery in Rib Lake, which used tannic acid from locally harvested hemlock bark to tan hides from as far away as South America to make leather. Rib Lake is a town in Taylor County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 768 at the 2000 census. The village of Rib Lake is completely surrounded by the town. History Most of the edges of the six by six squares that would become Rib Lake were surveyed in October 1861 by a crew working for the U.S. government. In early 1862, the same crew marked all the section corners in the township, walking through the woods and swamps, measuring with chain and compass. When done, the deputy surveyor filed this general description for the six by six square that now contains the village of Rib Lake: ''The Surface of this Township is generally rolling. Soil Fair 2nd Rate and good for agricultural purposes. Timber Hemlock Birch Sugar and White Pine of good quality. It is well watered by numerous Small Lakes and Streams of pure water.'' The unincorporated community of Queenstown is also located in the town. Geography Westboro is the largest town in Taylor County. Instead of the typical six miles by six, it is six by twenty miles.
