WHOP (1230 kHz) is an AM radio station broadcasting a news–talk format. Licensed to and serving Hopkinsville, Kentucky, United States, the station serves the Clarksville–Hopkinsville area. The station is currently owned by Forcht Broadcasting. The station's studios are located on Buttermilk Road (known to station management as Dink Embry's Buttermilk Road in tribute to the former on-air personality of that name) off Dawson Springs Road on the northwestern outskirts of Hopkinsville. Its transmitter is located on Witty Lane off Princeton Road northwest of Hopkinsville. History The station first began broadcasting on January 6, 1940. The station was presided by Pierce Lackey, who had operated WPAD radio in Paducah in the 1930s, with Hecht S. Hopkinsville is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Christian County, Kentucky, United States. The population at the 2010 census was 31,577. History Early years The area of present-day Hopkinsville was initially claimed in 1796 by Bartholomew Wood as part of a grant for his service in the American Revolution. He and his wife Martha Ann moved from Jonesborough, Tennessee, first to a cabin near present-day W. Seventh and Bethel streets; then to a second cabin near present-day 9th and Virginia streets; and finally to a third home near 14th and Campbell. Following the creation of Christian County the same year, the Woods donated of land and a half interest in their Old Rock Spring to form its seat of government in 1797. By 1798, a log courthouse, jail, and "stray pen" had been built; the next year, John Campbell and Samuel Means laid out the streets for "Christian Court House". The UK Sports Network, historically known as the Big Blue Sports Network (BBSN) and also formerly known as the UK IMG Sports Network, is the radio and television network of the University of Kentucky Wildcats men's and women's sports teams. WSM (650 kHz) is a 50,000-watt clear channel AM radio station located in Nashville, Tennessee. It broadcasts a full-time country music format (with classic country and Americana leanings, the latter of which is branded as "Route 650") at 650 kHz and is known primarily as the home of the ''Grand Ole Opry'', the world's longest running radio program. The station's clear channel signal can reach much of North America and nearby countries, especially late at night. It is one of two clear-channel stations in North America, along with CFZM in Toronto, that still primarily broadcast music; as recently as 2020, the station was live and locally originated during the overnight hours, but the overnight host position was eliminated in February 2020. Paducah ( ) is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of McCracken County, Kentucky. WPAD
WPAD (1560 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports format. Licensed to Paducah, Kentucky, United States. The station is owned by the Bristol Broadcasting Company, Inc. WPAD is the fifth oldest radio broadcasting station in Kentucky, founded in 1930 by Pierce Lackey. It broadcast on 1420 kHz with a 100 watt signal. In 1941 the power was increased to 250 watts, and the frequency was changed to 1450 kHz. In 1943 the station joined the CBS radio network. In 1946 WPAD added the first FM broadcasting in the state, continuing with FM simulcast until the 1970s. In 1962, the power was increased to 1,000 watts. In 1967 Lackey died and the station was purchased by Ed Fritts. In the 1970s the FM call letters were changed to WDDJ and the FM programming was changed to progressive rock. Kentucky Route 91 (KY 91) is a state highway that traverses three counties in western Kentucky. It begins in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and ends at the Ohio River, the Kentucky-Illinois state line in northern Crittenden County. Route description Hopkinsville to Princeton It begins at a junction with U.S. Route 68 and Kentucky Route 80 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, the Christian County seat. It crosses KY-1682, the Hopkinsville By-Pass before leaving town. Kentucky Route 109
Kentucky Route 109 (KY 109) is an north–south state highway that traverses four counties in Kentucky's Pennyrile region. It traverses Christian, Hopkins, Webster, and Union counties. Route description KY 109 starts at an intersection with KY 56 just east of the bridge over the Ohio River that marks the Illinois–Kentucky state line near Old Shawneetown, Illinois. KY 109 runs a few miles east of that bridge and heads south, passing through the Union County communities of Henshaw and Sturgis. It runs concurrently with U.S. Route 60 (US 60) for a few miles and then runs onto a southeasterly course into Webster County. Once in that county, KY 109 enters Providence, where it meets KY 120. Clarksville Metropolitan Area
The Clarksville Metropolitan Statistical Area is defined by the United States Census Bureau as an area consisting of four counties – two ( Montgomery and Stewart) in Tennessee and two (Christian and Trigg) in Kentucky – anchored by the city of Clarksville, Tennessee. A July 1, 2018 estimate placed the population at 307,820. As of 2009, the Clarksville Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 167th largest MSA in the United States. Prior to 2003, the area was officially known as the Clarksville-Hopkinsville Metropolitan Statistical Area and included only Montgomery and Christian counties.
