Wings Over Jordan Choir
The Wings Over Jordan Choir was an African-American a cappella spiritual choir founded and based in Cleveland, Ohio. The choir is also known for a weekly religious radio series, ''Wings Over Jordan'', which was created to showcase the group. Debuting over Cleveland radio station WGAR in 1937 as ''The Negro Hour'', the radio program was broadcast on the Columbia Broadcasting System from 1938 to 1947 and the Mutual Broadcasting System through 1949. ''Wings Over Jordan'' broke the color barrier as the first radio program produced and hosted by African-Americans to be nationally broadcast over a network. WGAR-FM
WGAR-FM (99.5 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Cleveland, Ohio, and features a country music format. Owned by iHeartMedia, the station serves Greater Cleveland and surrounding Northeast Ohio as the local affiliate for ''The Bobby Bones Show''. WGAR-FM's studios are located in downtown Cleveland and the transmitter is in nearby Parma. Signing on in 1952 as the FM extension of WGAR (), WGAR-FM mostly operated in obscurity until 1970, when management instituted a progressive rock format as WNCR. Chuck Collier
Charles Collier (May 6, 1947—September 22, 2011) was a radio personality, best known for his many years at radio stations WGAR (AM) and WGAR-FM in Cleveland, Ohio. Early life Collier was born on May 6, 1947 in Greenfield, Ohio, and as a boy moved to New Vienna, Ohio. He is a graduate of New Kenton High School and the University of Cincinnati. Career He began his broadcasting career shortly after college, bouncing between jobs in Cincinnati (WSAI), Dayton (WONE), and New York City (WCBS-FM). He came to Cleveland in 1970, where he worked for WGAR (1220 AM), and later its sister station, WGAR-FM (99.5 FM). He served the latter part of his tenure as music director/afternoon drive DJ. John Donald Imus Jr. (July 23, 1940 – December 27, 2019), also known mononymously as Imus, was an American radio personality, television show host, recording artist, and author. His radio show, ''Imus in the Morning'', was aired on various stations and digital platforms nationwide until 2018. In 1968, he began his first radio job, at KUTY in Palmdale, California. Three years later, he landed the morning broadcast position at WNBC in New York City. Imus was fired from WNBC in 1977, and following a one-year stint at WHK in Cleveland was rehired by WNBC in 1979. John Lanigan (born 1943 in Ogallala, Nebraska) is a radio and TV broadcaster primarily known for his work in Cleveland, Ohio, including as the longtime morning host at WMJI in Cleveland from 1985 to 2014. Biography Early career Lanigan was born in Ogallala, Nebraska, in 1943. While in high school, he was a DJ at his high school's radio station. Throughout the 1960s, Lanigan bounced between jobs in Denver's KHOW and Colorado Springs, Colorado, at one point working in both cities simultaneously: Colorado Springs during the day, and Denver at night.
