WHIM (defunct)
WHIM (known on-air as "WHIM Country") was a country music radio station in the Providence, Rhode Island market. History WHIM was first heard on April 15, 1947 when a new daytimer signed on for the first time on 1110 kHz. From 1958–1966, while under ownership of C. George Taylor and Bob Engles, WHIM was a top 40 station competing with WPRO/630 and WICE/1290. The station's owners also operated WHIM-FM/99.9 licensed to Cranston, Rhode Island, which later became WLOV and went dark. A new WHIM-FM emerged on 94.1 MHz in 1966 when WHIM began broadcasting the format it would keep in one form or another for 31 years: country music. WHIM competed against fellow daytimers WRIB/1220 in Providence and WYNG/1590 in Warwick for Rhode Island's country music audience. Providence Metropolitan Area
The Providence metropolitan area is a region extending into eight counties in two states, and is the 38th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Anchored by the city of Providence, Rhode Island, it has an estimated population of 1,622,520, exceeding that of Rhode Island by slightly over 60%. The area covers almost all of Rhode Island. Thirty-eight of the 39 municipalities in the state are included; only Westerly is not. The Providence Metropolitan Statistical Area also extends into southern Massachusetts with an average population density of 2300 per mi2 (888 per km2). WPVD (AM)
WPVD (1290 AM) is a public radio station in Providence, Rhode Island. It is owned by Rhode Island Public Radio. The station simulcasts WNPN 89.3 FM. WPVD transmits with 400 watts by day, 16 watts by night, using a one-tower omnidirectional antenna. The transmitter is off Douglas Avenue in North Providence. On November 23, 2018, the FCC granted a construction permit for W275DA, an FM translator station on 102.9 MHz. On September 30, 2021, 102.9FM began broadcasting from the same tower was WPRO-FM. HLN is an American basic cable network. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, the network primarily carries true crime programming. WCTK (98.1 FM, "Cat Country 98.1") is a country- formatted radio station serving Southern New England, with studios in Providence, Rhode Island, and transmitter in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The station is owned by Hall Communications. History WCTK was originally WFMR and had an authorized power of 20 kilowatts. It went on the air December 9, 1946; during the inaugural program, Massachusetts governor Maurice J. Tobin said that WFMR was the first new FM station to sign on in New England after World War II. In 1973, WFMR changed its callsign to WMYS, with an oldies and classic hits format. WSKP (1180 AM) is a radio station licensed to Hope Valley, Rhode Island. The station is owned by John Fuller's Red Wolf Broadcasting Corporation and airs an oldies radio format. WSKP operates as part of the "Kool Radio" trimulcast, along with 990 WNTY in Southington, Connecticut (near Hartford), and 1490 WACM in Springfield, Massachusetts. WSKP is a daytimer AM station. By day, it broadcasts at 1,800 watts and at 1,000 watts during critical hours. But 1180 AM is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A WHAM in Rochester, New York. Hope Valley is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Hopkinton in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,612 at the 2010 census. Hope Valley is the largest village in Hopkinton and the town's principal commercial center. WHJJ (920 kHz, "News Radio 920 & 104.7 FM") is a commercial radio station in Providence, Rhode Island. It carries a talk radio format and is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The studios and offices are on Oxford Street in Providence. WHJJ operates at 5,000 watts. The transmitter site is off Wampanoag Trail (Rhode Island Route 114) in East Providence. The Outlet Company was a corporation based in Providence, Rhode Island, which owned holdings in both retail and broadcasting. The centerpieces of the group was its flagship Providence store (''The Outlet'') and WJAR radio and television, also in Providence. Easy Listening
Easy listening (including mood music) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs, non-rock vocals and instrumental covers of selected popular rock songs. It mostly concentrates on music that pre-dates the rock and roll era, characteristically on music from the 1940s and 1950s. It was differentiated from the mostly instrumental beautiful music format by its variety of styles, including a percentage of vocals, arrangements and tempos to fit various parts of the broadcast day.
