Lancaster, Wisconsin
Lancaster is a city in and the county seat of Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,907 at the 2020 census. History Lancaster originated as a planned community to serve as the county seat for Grant County. Anticipating the county's establishment in 1836, Major Glendower M. Price, a Cassville merchant and land speculator, purchased the site of Lancaster for its central location in the county. Major Price platted the town on a compass-aligned grid in 1837, reserving a large central square for the new county government. He was persuaded to name the city Lancaster by a relative who migrated from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Maj. Price and Daniel Banfill contracted to construct the first county courthouse, which stood on the square from 1838-1851. A second courthouse was constructed in 1852-1853 and enlarged in 1865. Platteville is the largest city in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin. The population was 11,836 at the 2020 census, up from 11,224 at the 2010 census. Much of this growth is likely due to the enrollment increase of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. It is the principal city of the Platteville Micropolitan Statistical area, which has an estimated population of 49,681. Platteville is located atop the greater Platte River valley in the southern Driftless Region of Wisconsin, an area known for its karst topography and rolling hills. WPVL (1590 AM broadcasting, AM), is an American radio station broadcasting a sports radio, sports format. WPVL, which is licensed to Platteville, Wisconsin, is owned by QueenB Radio Wisconsin, Inc. and features programming from ESPN Radio. Former call signs used by WPVL have been WTOQ and WSWW. The station's current letters were formerly held by WPVL in Painesville, Ohio. Prior to their current sports format, the station programmed oldies music. In April 2012, WPVL was granted a U.S. Federal Communications Commission construction permit to move to a new transmitter site, decrease day power to 970 watts, and decrease night power to 470 watts.
