WGHR (106.3 MHz) is an FM radio station broadcasting Westwood One's Good Time Oldies format. Licensed to Spring Hill, Florida, United States, it serves the northern Tampa Bay area, including Hernando and Citrus Counties. The station is currently owned by WGUL-FM, Inc. (named after the station's former call sign; see WGUL). History The station went on the air on 97.1 MHz as WEOA on 1989-10-31. On 1990-01-05, the station changed its call sign to WPDS and on August 14, 1992, to WXOF. As WXOF, then a country music-formatted station, the station would swap frequencies in 1998 with Holiday-based WLVU-FM 106.3 (now WSUN), in order for the latter station to get a stronger signal in the Tampa Bay area. First created by recording executive Al Ham in 1978, the format achieved popularity in the 1980s among AM radio stations in the United States and Canada, which were then facing declines in listenership in a transition period of most popular music to the FM band. WSUN (97.1 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station, licensed to Holiday, Florida, and serving the Tampa Bay Area. The station is owned by Spanish Broadcasting System, and airs a Spanish contemporary hits format branded as "El Zol 97.1". The transmitter site is off Dartmouth Drive in Holiday. History The station signed on September 1, 1978, on the 106.3 FM frequency as WHBS, a station that served primarily Pasco and northern Pinellas Counties. The station later became WVTY, then WLVU, carrying an easy listening format and later adult contemporary. In 1998, the station would relocate to 97.1 FM (swapping frequencies with Citrus County's WXOF), to better reach the Tampa Bay market. Soon afterward, Cox Radio would acquire WLVU in a swap (see below), and transfer its WSUN calls to FM, adopting an oldies format as "Oldies 97.1". Holiday is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pasco County, Florida, Pasco County, Florida, United States. It is a suburb of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 22,403 as of the 2010 census. In the early 1960s, William W. Boyd, president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Tarpon Springs, noted the name Holiday Drive on a map near the site of the proposed branch to be built in southwestern Pasco County and asked his board of directors to give the name to the new branch. WEOA (1400 AM) is a radio station licensed to and serving the Evansville, Indiana market. The transmitter is located near the interchange of I-69 and Weinbach Avenue in Evansville. History 1400 AM originally was WEOA (Evansville On the Air) then changed to WROZ, a Top 40 station in the 1960s with top personalities such as Charlie Shoe, Jack Etzel, Mark Clark, Steve Walling, and Johnny Carr, and country music in the 1970s and 1980s with top personalities: Tiny Hughes and Jim Embry. After WROZ left, 1400 became a simulcast of then WJPS-FM (now WLFW 93.5). The station is owned by Salem Communications and features only syndicated conservative weekday programming from Salem Radio Network. 860 kHz is a Canadian clear-channel frequency. History WGUL previously ran a live, locally based "Music of Your Life" format from 1985 to August 12, 2005.
