WGHJ (105.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Christian radio format. Licensed to Fair Bluff, North Carolina, United States, and serving the Whiteville, North Carolina area, the station is owned by Augusta Radio Fellowship Institute. History The station went on the air as WSIM on May 2, 2000. On June 18, 2003, the station changed its call sign to WPPG, then to WNFI on September 7, 2004, on March 22, 2005 to WODR, and on December 15, 2015 to the current WGHJ. In June 2003, WPPG began airing a Triple-A format. The Penguin, also heard on 106.7 FM starting in August, was "a different kind of bird" that played "the music you've been waiting for." Program director Mark Keefe came from WNCW. Later, this station played oldies. As Radio Fiesta, the station's format was Regional Mexican, with its programming also heard on WOLH and WHYM in Florence, South Carolina and WFMO, which is licensed to Fairmont, North Carolina. WOLH (1230 AM) is a radio station airing a sports format known as "ESPN 96.3 - 1230". Licensed to Florence, South Carolina, United States, the station serves the Florence area. The station is owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC. The station's programming also aired on WHYM in Lake City and W255BD in Darlington. FM Translator WOLH programming is relayed to an FM translator in addition to the main frequency on 1230 kHz. History WOLH at 1230 AM was once WOLS, signing on in 1937; it was the first radio station in Florence, South Carolina. WOLS was once owned and operated by Melvin Purvis (1903–1960), the former FBI agent credited with capturing or killing John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd in the 1930s. Studios were located on the 100 block of S. Dargan Street in downtown Florence. Daytime power was 1,000 watts but reduced to 500 watts at sunset. WFBT (106.7 FM, "Hope Radio"), is a southern gospel radio station that broadcasts out of Wilmington, North Carolina. History In 1999, WLGX began playing smooth jazz such as The Rippingtons, Dave Koz and Larry Carlton along with R&B by Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder. On August 18, 2003, WUIN joined WPPG and became "The Penguin," described as "a different kind of bird" that played "the music you've been waiting for." For the next 2 years the station introduced an eclectic mix to its listeners. Program director Mark Keefe came from WNCW. In this format, Woody Guthrie might be followed by R.L. Burnside, John Prine and Phish, for example. In late August 2005, the program director and music director were relieved of their duties, leaving many to speculate about the future of The Penguin. Fair Bluff, North Carolina
Fair Bluff is a town in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States that was devastated by coastal flooding from Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and inundated again by high water by Hurricane Florence in 2018. Before the two events, the population was 951 at the 2010 census but is believed to be lower following the two disasters, some estimates going as low as 450 people. The shrinking of town's size, and damage from the storms has led to a rapid decline in tax base. History Fair Bluff was the name originally given to a bluff overlooking the Lumber River. In 1807 plans were made to build a town upon the lands of John Wooton at the bluff to be known as Wootonton. The town was established but the name was never changed. Monroe is a city in and the county seat of Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population increased from 32,797 in 2010 to 34,551 in 2020. It is within the rapidly growing Charlotte metropolitan area. Monroe has a council-manager form of government. History Monroe was founded as a planned settlement. In 1843, the first Board of County Commissioners, appointed by the General Assembly, selected an area in the center of the county as the county seat, and Monroe was incorporated that year. It was named for James Monroe, the country's fifth president. It became a trading center for the agricultural areas of the Piedmont region, which cultivated tobacco. WIXE (1190 AM) is a commercial radio station in Monroe, North Carolina. It is owned by Monroe Broadcasting and airs a local talk radio format along with classic country music and southern gospel on Sundays. WIXE uses local disc jockeys during the day and is automated at night, carrying the syndicated John Tesh radio show, "Intelligence for Your Life," playing Classic Country Music with Tesh's dialogue. By day, WIXE broadcasts at 5,000 watts, using a non-directional antenna. Because 1190 AM is a clear channel frequency, WIXE greatly reduces power at night to 70 watts to avoid interference. Fairmont, North Carolina
Fairmont is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,663 at the 2010 Census. History Fairmont was originally known as Ashpole in homage to the nearby Ashpole Swamp. It was incorporated as Union City in 1899, but the name was changed back to Ashpole in 1901. Six years later the name was changed to Fairmont. The first settlers to this area received land grants from the Lords Proprietors and worked in the logging and naval stores industries producing lumber, turpentine and pitch for ships. The Bufort County Lumber Company opened in the northern section of town in the late 1890s employing 300 men and becoming one of the largest lumber companies in the south. By the late 19th century, a thriving tobacco market had been established as well. The railroads later followed to rapidly move these goods.
