WDYT (1220 AM) is a radio station licensed to Kings Mountain, North Carolina, serving the Charlotte metropolitan area. WGIV (1370 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Pineville, North Carolina, and serving the Charlotte metropolitan area. It airs an urban contemporary radio format. WGIV is owned by Frank Neely, but the station is operated by Steve Hedgwood's Core Communications, which owns a similar trimulcast in Atlanta of W233BF, WIPK and WFDR. By day, WGIV is powered at 16,000 watts. To protect other stations on 1370 AM, it greatly reduces power at night to 45 watts. WGIV is simulcast on FM translators W277CB at 103.3 MHz and W263CY at 100.5 MHz, both of which are licensed to Charlotte. But because 1070 AM is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KNX Los Angeles, WGOS must sign off at night to avoid interference. Tommy Faile (September 15, 1928 – August 2, 1998) was an American songwriter and singer best known for composing "Phantom 309" and singing "The Legend of the Brown Mountain Lights". He was known for his deep voice and comic on-stage banter. Biography Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, Faile got his start on local radio in 1946 with Snuffy Jenkins, Homer Sherrill and the Hired Hands on WIS in Columbia, South Carolina. Faile also appeared on national radio in 1949 on "Philip Morris Night with Horace Heidt". In 1951, he joined Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith's Crackerjacks as a bass player and singer. Faile also sang bass for Smith's gospel group, The Crossroads Quartet. WULR broadcasts a Spanish language Christian talk and teaching radio format. By day, WULR is powered at 3,000 watts, using a directional antenna. But to avoid interfering with other stations on 980 AM, it reduces power at night to 167 watts. The station uses a two-tower array. Shelby is a city in and the county seat of Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States. It lies near the western edge of the Charlotte combined statistical area. The population was 20,323 at the 2010 census. History The area was originally inhabited by Catawba and Cherokee peoples and was later settled between around 1760. "Oh Lonesome Me" is a popular song written and recorded in December 1957 by Don Gibson with Chet Atkins producing it for RCA Victor in Nashville. Released in 1958, the song topped the country chart for eight non-consecutive weeks. On what became the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, it peaked at No. 7. It was Gibson's only Top 10 hit on the pop chart. Donald Eugene Gibson (April 3, 1928 – November 17, 2003) was an American songwriter and country musician. A Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Gibson wrote such country standards as " Sweet Dreams" and "I Can't Stop Loving You", and enjoyed a string of country hits ("Oh Lonesome Me") from 1957 into the mid-1970s. Kings Mountain is a small suburban city within the Charlotte metropolitan area in Cleveland and Gaston counties, North Carolina, United States.
