WDCZ
WDCZ is an American radio station in Buffalo, New York broadcasting at 970 kHz. WDCZ has not originated any programming of its own since 2012. The station operated as a commercial station from its launch in 1924 until 1975, then operated as a public radio station from 1975 to 2012. In its later years, much of its programming was duplicating that of competing FM station WBFO, which eventually prompted the two stations to merge operations (using WBFO's frequency) in 2012. After several months of simulcasting WBFO, the 970 facility was sold off to the owners of religious-formatted WDCX-FM, who in turn switched 970 to a simulcast of WDCX, a status it has held ever since. WDCX-FM (99.5 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Buffalo, New York. The station airs a brokered religious radio format. WDCX-FM is owned by Kimtron, Inc., a division of Crawford Broadcasting. Its studios are located in the Allentown neighborhood north of downtown Buffalo, and the transmitter site is located off Zimmerman Road in Boston, New York, southeast of Buffalo. As a brokered time station, nationally known religious leaders pay WDCX-FM for their half hour segments on the station, and appeal to the listeners for contributions. It is owned by the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association (formerly the Western New York Educational TV Association), doing business as Buffalo Toronto Public Media. WEBR (1440 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station. Licensed to Niagara Falls, New York, United States, the station serves the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area from studios in Buffalo. The station is currently owned by William Yuhnke, through licensee Kenmore Broadcasting Communications, Inc. It broadcasts a full-service Middle of the Road radio format during the week, with ethnic Polish and Italian music, oldies, and adult standards heard on weekends. By day, WEBR transmits with 1,000 watts of power, using a non-directional antenna pattern. At night, to avoid interfering with other stations on 1440 AM, power is reduced to 55 watts. Fran Striker
Francis Hamilton "Fran" Striker (August 19, 1903 – September 4, 1962) was an American writer for radio and comics, best known for creating the characters the Lone Ranger, the Green Hornet, and Sgt. Preston of the Yukon. Early life Born in Buffalo, New York, Striker attended Lafayette High School and the University of Buffalo, where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He dropped out of college, first serving a brief stint in New York City with an amateur theatrical company. Returning to Buffalo, he joined the staff of radio station WEBR (now WDCZ), working as an announcer. In 1929, he moved to WTAM in Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as announcer and continuity writer and wrote his first radio drama script, a biography of Stephen Foster. The Blue Network (previously known as the NBC Blue Network) was the on-air name of a now defunct American Commercial broadcasting, radio network, which broadcast from 1927 through 1945. Beginning as one of the two radio networks owned by the NBC, National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the independent Blue Network was born of a divestiture in 1942, arising from antitrust litigation. Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger is a fictional masked former Texas Ranger who fought outlaws in the American Old West with his Native American friend Tonto. The character has been called an enduring icon of American culture. He first appeared in 1933 in a radio show on WXYZ (Detroit), conceived either by station owner George W. Trendle or by Fran Striker, the show's writer. Test episodes aired earlier on radio station WEBR in Buffalo. ''Morning Edition'' is an American radio news program produced and distributed by NPR. It airs weekday mornings (Monday through Friday) and runs for two hours, and many stations repeat one or both hours.
