WBSD
WBSD (89.1 FM) is a high school radio station licensed to serve Burlington, Wisconsin, US. The station is owned by the Burlington Area School District and operated by the staff and students of Burlington High School. The station's studios are on the current Burlington High School campus but the transmitter site is at Karcher Middle School which is housed in the former Burlington High School building. The current General Manager, Thomas Gilding, began managing the station in mid-2009 becoming only the third General Manager in the station's history after Arlo Ketchpaw and the station's founder, Wisconsin Broadcasters' Association Hall of Fame Member, Terry Havel. Programming WBSD broadcasts a community-oriented adult album alternative (aka "Triple A") music format. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Burlington High School (Burlington, Wisconsin)
Burlington High School is a public high school in Burlington, Wisconsin. It is administered by the Burlington Area School District. The school's mascot is the Demon and its colors are orange and black. Its fight song borrows the melody of the traditional Navy song ''Anchor's Aweigh''. Academics Burlington High School owns and operates a radio station, 89.1 WBSD, one of the first high school radio stations in Wisconsin. Founded in 1975 by Terry Havel, WBSD is operated by a staff of students, faculty, and community members. Athletics BHS athletic teams participate in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 and are a part of the Southern Lakes Conference. BHS won a state championship in boys' cross country in 1965, girls' volleyball team won the WIAA state championship in 2017. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles. The first call letters of the station were KFIF. The station made its formal debut on the air and was officially dedicated in early May of 1923, between the hours of 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., on the opening night of the 5th annual Benson Tech Show. Burlington, Wisconsin
Burlington is a city in Racine and Walworth counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, with the majority of the city located in Racine County. The population of the city was 11,047 as of the 2020 census. History Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the area, Native American mounds were constructed near the present location of Burlington. For example, around 1830, a small Potawatomi village stood in what is now the Town of Burlington, though it wasn't larger than the present-day city. The earliest certain European presence in what is now Burlington was in the fall of 1799, when a group of French explorers and missionaries led by Francis Morgan de Vereceones made a portage from the Root River to the Fox River, reaching the Fox at approximately Burlington's present location. FM Broadcasting
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of higher fidelity—that is, more accurate reproduction of the original program sound—than other broadcasting technologies, such as AM broadcasting.
