WBEM (AM)
WBEM 1350 AM is a former American radio station, first going on the air May 18, 1964. Its community of license had been Windber, Pennsylvania. This station's last owner had been Jotocon Communications, which took over operations in 1989, but the station would go silent in 1991 and its license was cancelled in 1996. History Originally known as WWBR, the station signed on May 18, 1964 from studios and offices at 1311 Midway Avenue in its then-city of license of Windber, and under the ownership of Windber Community Broadcasting System. Dr. E.Z. Epperjessy served as company president, and George Ledney served as the station's first general manager. First sale In January 1975, the station was sold by Windber Community Broadcasting System to WWBR, Inc. Louis Popp served as company president and general manager. Windber, Pennsylvania
Windber is a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States, about south of Johnstown. It was at one time a place of industrial activities which included coal mining, lumbering, and the manufacture of fire brick. In 1897, the community was founded by coal barons Charles and Edward Julius Berwind, owners of the Berwind Corporation; the name "Windber" simply switches the order of the two syllables in the family name "Berwind". 8,013 people lived in Windber in 1910 and 9,057 in 1940; the population was 3,930 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Windber started in 1897 as a company town for nearby coal mines in the vicinity of Johnstown. Geistown is a borough in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,467 at the 2010 census. Geography Geistown is located in southwestern Cambria County at (40.294325, -78.873968). Downtown Johnstown is to the northwest. WZUM (1590 AM) was a radio station in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. WZUM was owned by Sovereign City Radio Services LLC. History After originally being awarded as WCNE but changing calls to WZUM before being licensed in 1964, the station signed on as an R&B and top 40 station, partly owned by popular Pittsburgh polka bandleader James Psihoulis "Jimmy Pol". During the 1970s, WZUM was a freeform AOR outlet from 10:00 a.m. until sunset, (broadcasting polkas in the morning from sunrise). "Powerful" Paul Perry, son of Pittsburgh TV personality Nick Perry, was one of the freeform disc jockeys; along with Kit Baron, "Laid Back" Larry Allen and Mark Wallace. WZUM switched to religious programming under the WPLW callsign in 1975 after its purchase by Robert Hickling.
