WAFU Nations Cup
The WAFU Nations Cup (also known as the WAFU Cup of Nations or simply the WAFU Cup) is an association football competition that is contested by representative teams of the West African Football Union. History A trophy was commissioned by President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo in 1974 with a view to establishing a regional competition similar to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The maiden event was hosted in Abidjan and the hosts Ivory Coast won the tournament. The West African Nations Cup (Zone 3) commenced in 1982 on an annual basis (not in 1985), and was played until 1987. Meanwhile, in 1983 ECOWAS (French:) create another tournament, the CEDEAO Cup (Zone 3) and it was played on a bi-annual basis until 1991. West African Football Union
The West African Football Union (french: Union des Fédérations Ouest-Africaines de Football; pt, União das Federações Oeste Africanas), officially abbreviated as WAFU-UFOA and WAFU, is an association of the football playing nations in West Africa. It was the brainchild of the Senegal Football Federation who requested that the nations belonging to CAF's Zone A and B meet and hold a regular competitive tournament. The union organises several competitions including the WAFU Nations Cup and in 2008 they organised an under-20 championship. Presidents The union's current president is actually Amos Adamu, but he was banned for three years from football activity by FIFA over vote-buying claims for the bids of the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. 2002 WAFU Nations Cup
The 2002 WAFU Nations Cup was supposed to be the first edition of the tournament, held in the Ivory Coast, but was postponed multiple times for various reasons before eventually being cancelled due to the outbreak of a civil war in the country. Overview The tournament featured players from local leagues only. The qualifying phase was completed from 7 April to 7 July 2001. The final phase was originally scheduled to be played in Dakar, Senegal, from 28 September to 7 October 2001. The beginning of the tournament was first postponed to October, however, after the Confederation of African Football had refused to give approval of the initial date due to claims it was being played too close to the start of the 2002 African Cup of Nations (set to kick off on 19 January 2002). The UEMOA Tournament is a football (soccer) tournament held between nations who are a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS; also known as in French and Portuguese) is a regional political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. The 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations (also referred to as Ghana 2017) was an association football tournament that took place in September 2017 in Ghana. Sixteen teams from West Africa participated. The tournament was the first featuring national teams to be arranged by Fox Sports as part of a twelve year partnership between the broadcaster and the West Africa national football associations union. Originally, one of the two host cities was set to be Sekondi-Takoradi however the local organising committee changed it to Elmina due to "structural defects at the Sekondi-Takoradi Stadium and the danger it could pose to fans during the tournament". The 2013 WAFU Nations Cup (known as the Go!TV WAFU Cup for sponsorship reasons) is an international home-based football competition. It was hosted in Ghana. The competition was organised by the West African Football Union (WAFU). It was originally scheduled to take place between October 24 and November 3, however it was delayed and began on 21 November. The 2010 WAFU Nations Cup was the first edition of the WAFU Nations Cup, an association football tournament organised by the West African Football Union. The 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations was the sixth edition of the WAFU Nations Cup, an association football tournament that is affiliated with the West African Football Union (WAFU). It took place from 28 September to 13 October 2019 in Thiès, Senegal. The tournament was sponsored by most notably ESPN and Royal Air Morac. All sixteen members of WAFU competed in the competition in a knockout-style format with the losers of the first round playing in a plate-competition.
