W93
The W93 is an American nuclear warhead planned to replace the W76 and W88 warheads on United States Navy submarines from 2034. The warhead will be carried on the new Columbia-class submarines and will use a new aeroshell, the Mark 7 reentry body (RB). The warhead will be designed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Mark 7 RB will also used to house the United Kingdom's new warhead, designed in parallel to the W93 and sharing some non-nuclear components. Design The warhead is expected to incorporate improved safety features such as insensitive high explosives. Trident, also known as the Trident nuclear programme or Trident nuclear deterrent, covers the development, procurement and operation of nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom and their means of delivery. Its purpose as stated by the Ministry of Defence is to "deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life, which cannot be done by other means". Trident is an operational system of four s armed with Trident II D-5 ballistic missiles, able to deliver thermonuclear warheads from multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs). Columbia-class Submarine
The ''Columbia''-class submarine (formerly known as the ''Ohio'' Replacement Submarine and SSBN-X Future Follow-on Submarine) is an upcoming class of nuclear submarines designed to replace the ballistic missile submarines in the United States Navy. The first submarine officially began construction on 1 October 2020, and is scheduled to enter service in 2031. On 3 June 2022, the Navy announced that this first boat will be named USS ''District of Columbia'' (SSBN-826), because there currently exists an attack submarine named USS ''Columbia'' (SSN-771). Insensitive Munition
Insensitive munitions are munitions that are designed to withstand stimuli representative of severe but credible accidents. The current range of stimuli are shock (from bullets, fragments and shaped charge jets), heat (from fires or adjacent thermal events) and adjacent detonating munitions. A munition can have its vulnerability reduced by a number of means used on their own or in combination such as a reduced vulnerability energetic material, design features, additions or changes to packaging etc. The munition must still retain its terminal effect and performance within acceptable parameters. Description Insensitive munitions (IM) will only burn (rather than explode) when subjected to fast or slow heating, bullets, shrapnel, shaped charges or the detonation of another nearby munition.
