w00w00 (pronounced whoo-whoo) was a computer security think tank founded in 1996 and still active until the early 2000s. Although this group was not well known outside Information security circles, its participants have spawned more than a dozen IT companies. The two most famous examples are WhatsApp, the messaging service, and Napster, the pioneering file-sharing company. Gordon Lyon
Gordon Lyon (also known by his pseudonym Fyodor Vaskovich) is an American network security expert, creator of Nmap and writer of books, websites, and technical papers about network security. He is a founding member of the Honeynet Project and was Vice President of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility. Personal life Lyon has been active in the network security community since the mid-1990s. His handle, "Fyodor", was taken from Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Most of his programming is done in the C, C++, and Perl programming languages. Pwn2Own is a computer hacking contest held annually at the CanSecWest security conference. First held in April 2007 in Vancouver, the contest is now held twice a year, most recently in April 2021. Contestants are challenged to exploit widely used software and mobile devices with previously unknown vulnerabilities. Winners of the contest receive the device that they exploited and a cash prize. The Pwn2Own contest serves to demonstrate the vulnerability of devices and software in widespread use while also providing a checkpoint on the progress made in security since the previous year. Jordan Ritter (born February 1, 1978) is an American serial entrepreneur, software architect and angel investor. He is best known for his work at Napster, the file-sharing service he co-founded along with Shawn Fanning and others. Niels Provos
Niels Provos is a German-American researcher in security engineering, malware, and cryptography. He received a PhD in computer science from the University of Michigan. From 2003 to 2018, he worked at Google as a Distinguished Engineer on computer security, security for Google Cloud Platform. In 2018, he left Google to join Stripe (company), Stripe as its new head of security. For many years, Provos contributed to the OpenBSD operating system, where he developed the bcrypt adaptive cryptographic hash function. Alexander Peslyak (Александр Песляк) (born 1977), better known as Solar Designer, is a security specialist from Russia. He is best known for his publications on exploitation techniques, including the return-to-libc attack and the first generic heap-based buffer overflow exploitation technique, as well as computer security protection techniques such as privilege separation for daemon processes. Immunet
Immunet is a free, cloud-based, community-driven antivirus application, using the ClamAV and its own engine. The software is complementary with existing antivirus software. In January 2011 Immunet was acquired by Sourcefire. The application is free-of-charge, although a commercial version is available. It claims to be lightweight and provides always up-to-date protection against the threats. Virus signature files are stored in the cloud, not on individual computers, so signature downloads are not required. Once a virus is detected and blocked for one user, all other Immunet users receive the same protection almost instantly. The software is noted for its ability to allow individual users to easily author their own signatures. Ejovi Nuwere (born 1980 is an American security engineer and entrepreneur. He was the co-founder of Google funded wireless company Fon and Microsoft funded analytics company Ivy Softworks. Early life Nuwere's early life is documented in his autobiography, ''Hacker cracker: a journey from the mean streets of Brooklyn to the frontiers of cyberspace'', written with David Chanoff. Despite the title, it is not focused solely on hacking. Nuwere writes about his mother's battle with drug addiction and her death and his families episodes of homelessness.
