W. D. S. Abeygoonawardena
Wijesekera Don Simon Abeygoonawardena (3 October 1907 - 30 December 1975) was a Ceylonese businessman and politician. He served as a member of Parliament of Ceylon for Galle electorate, representing the United National Party. Early life Wijesekera Don Simon Abeygoonawardena was born on 3 October 1907, Naotunna, Matara, the third son of Wijesekara Don Diyonis Abeygoonawardena and Gimara Podi Hami née Kaluarachchi. He was educated at St. Aloysius' College (Galle), Mahinda College (Galle) and St. Peter's College (Colombo). In 1934, at the age of 27, he started the first independent bus service, and by 1945 he was the managing director of the Galle Motor Bus Company. The company had a fleet of 126 buses, most of them were American manufactured Chevrolet buses, which were assembled in Abeygoonawardena's garage located at Pettigalawatte. July 1960 Ceylonese Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Ceylon in July 1960. Background The March 1960 election had left neither of Ceylon's two major parties with a majority, so another election was inevitable. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which had been in disarray since the murder of its leader S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike the previous year, settled on his widow, Sirimavo, as its new leader. She pledged to continue her husband's policies, notably the Sinhala Only Act, and to proceed with repatriation of the estate Tamils to India. However, she promised to reach a compromise with the Federal Party. The United National Party, led by Dudley Senanayake, refused to compromise with the Federal Party. Dudley Shelton Senanayake ( Sinhala: ඩඩ්ලි ශෙල්ටන් සේනානායක: ta, டட்லி சேனநாயக்கா; 19 June 1911 – 13 April 1973), was a Sri Lankan statesman who served as Prime Minister of Ceylon from 1952 to 1953 (first term as the second prime minister of Ceylon), in 1960 (second term) and from 1965 to 1970 (third term) and Leader of the Opposition from 1960 to 1964. Senanayake's tenures as prime minister were associated with democratic socialist policies focused on agricultural and educational reforms with a pro-western alignment.
