Vārttikakāra
A ( sa, वार्त्तिककार, , ''Commentator''), in Indian linguistics and philosophy, is a person who wrote a critical commentary or a gloss on a given grammatical or philosophical work. Monier Williams Dictionary defines Vārttikakāra as a composer of vārttikas. A vārttika is defined as a single remark or a whole work attempting to present a detailed commentary. The word vārttik- derives from , either in the sense of 'the turning () of sūtra-formulation into a fully worded paraphrase' or, in the sense of 'procedure (of the teaching)'. According to the Indian tradition, the purpose of a vārttika is to enquire into what has been said (''ukta''), what has not been said (''anukta''), and what has not been said clearly (''durukta''). Sureśvara
Sureśvara (also known as Sureśvarācārya, was a 9th-century Indian Philosophy, philosopher, who studied under Adi Shankara, Śankara. Śankara is said to have entrusted to Sureśvara his first monastic institution, the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. Sureśvara is believed to have founded the famous Naduvil Madhom, Thrissur, Naduvil Matham in Thrissur. Life Little is known for sure about Sureśvara's life. According to a strong tradition within Advaita Vedanta, Advaita Vedānta, before he became a disciple of Śankara, Sureśvara was known as Maņdana Miśra, Maṇḍana Miśra, a Mimamsa, Mīmāmsāka. After being defeated in a debate by Śankara, Miśra renounced his life as a householder and became a Sanyasa, sannyāsin. Whether this Maṇḍana Miśra was the same as the author of ''Brahmasiddhi'' is questioned by modern scholars on the basis of textual analysis. Indian Philosophy
Indian philosophy refers to philosophical traditions of the Indian subcontinent. A traditional Hindu classification divides āstika and nāstika schools of philosophy, depending on one of three alternate criteria: whether it believes the Vedas as a valid source of knowledge; whether the school believes in the premises of Brahman and Atman; and whether the school believes in afterlife and Devas. There are six major schools of Vedic philosophy— Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mīmāṃsā and Vedanta, and five major heterodox (sramanic) schools—Jain, Buddhist, Ajivika, Ajñana, and Charvaka. Paul Thieme
Paul Thieme (; 18 March 1905 – 24 April 2001) was a German indologist and scholar of Vedic Sanskrit. In 1988 he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for "he added immensely to our knowledge of Vedic and other classical Indian literature and provided a solid foundation to the study of the history of Indian thought". Biography He received his doctorate in Indology in 1928 from the University of Göttingen, and habilitated there in 1932. From 1932 to 1935 he taught German and French at the University of Allahabad. He taught at Breslau from 1936 to 1940, and received tenure at Halle in 1941, but in the same year he was drafted to the German army, where he worked as an interpreter. In 1945, he was captured by U.S. troops in Württemberg. After his release in 1946, he returned to Halle, where he remained until 1953, when he moved to Frankfurt for a professorship in Indo-European studies, against the will of the GDR authorities. ''Advaita Vedanta'' (; sa, अद्वैत वेदान्त, ) is a Hindu sādhanā, a path of spiritual discipline and experience, and the oldest extant tradition of the orthodox Hindu school Vedānta. ''Vedanta'' (; sa, वेदान्त, ), also ''Uttara Mīmāṃsā'', is one of the six (''āstika'') schools of Hindu philosophy.
