Vélez is a surname of Spanish origin. Although it has been suggested that it could be derived from Basque, it is, in fact, a patronym from the medieval name ''Vela'', which itself is derived from ''Vigila'' (''Wigila''), a Germanic name used by the Visigoths. Clemente Soto Vélez (1905 – April 15, 1993) was a Puerto Rican nationalist, poet, journalist and activist who mentored many generations of artists in Puerto Rico and New York City. Upon his death in 1993, he left a rich legacy that contributed to the cultural, social and economic life of Puerto Ricans in New York and Latinos everywhere. Early years Soto Vélez was born in Lares, Puerto Rico a town known for "El Grito de Lares" of 1868, a rebellion against Spanish colonial rule. His parents died when he was seven years old and he went to live with his godfather who raised him. He received his primary education in Lares and later studied painting in the City of Arecibo under the guidance of Ildefonso Ruiz Vélez. In 1918, he moved to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico and lived with his sister. Juan Estiven Vélez Upegui (born in Medellín, Antioquia. 9 February 1982) is a retired Colombian footballer. He played as a left back defender or defensive midfielder. Ion Vélez Martínez (born 17 February 1985) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for Peña Sport FC as a forward. Club career Vélez was born in Tafalla, Navarre. Fermín Vélez (April 3, 1959 – March 31, 2003) was a Spanish sports car racing driver, two-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring and two-time World Sportscar Championship Group C2 champion.
