Vänge, Gotland
Vänge is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the administrative Vänge District, established on 1January 2016. Geography Vänge is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding the medieval Vänge Church, sometimes referred to as ''Vänge kyrkby''. Vänge is situated in the central part of Gotland. , Vänge Church belongs to Vänge parish in Romaklosters pastorat, along with the churches in Buttle, Guldrupe, Sjonhem, Viklau and Halla. One of the asteroids in the asteroid belt, 10794 Vänge, is named after this place. History With the establishing of railways on Gotland in 1878, one of the stations resulted in the settlement Bjärges in Vänge. Other settlements are Bringes and Nickarve. Gutnish Language
Gutnish ( ), or rarely Gutnic ( sv, gutniska or ), refers to the original language spoken on parts of the islands of Gotland and Fårö. The different dialects of Gutnish, while stemming from the Old Gutnish ( sv, Forngutniska) variety of Old Norse, are sometimes considered part of modern Swedish. Gutnish exists in two variants, Mainland Gutnish (''Storlandsgutamål'' or ''Storlandsmål''), mostly spoken in the southern and southeastern portion of Gotland, where the dialect of Lau, Gotland, Lau became the standard form on the Main Island (''Lau Gutnish'' → ''Laumål''), and Fårömål dialect, Fårö Gutnish (Gutnish: ''Faroymal''; sv, Fårömål), spoken on the island of Fårö. UNESCO defines Gutnish as a "List of endangered languages in Europe, definitely endangered language" as of 2010. Vänge Church, Gotland
Vänge Church ( sv, Vänge kyrka) is a medieval church in Vänge on the island of Gotland, Sweden. Its oldest parts date to circa 1200. It belongs to the Diocese of Visby. History and architecture The Romanesque church tower is the oldest part of the church. It was built circa 1200. Originally it was attached to a Romanesque church, the nave and choir of which however was replaced with the presently visible Gothic parts at the end of the 13th century. The sacristy is the only non-medieval part of the church; it was built in 1866. The exterior of the church is decorated with Romanesque reliefs, re-used from the earlier church and incorporated into the Gothic structure. Inside, the choir retains traces of original medieval murals. Several of the church fittings are medieval. The baptismal font dates from the 12th century and was made by the sculptor Hegvald; it is considered one of the artist's finest pieces. List Of Gotland Related Asteroids
Several asteroids or minor planets in the asteroid belt with Gotland-related names have been discovered and named by Swedish astronomer Claes-Ingvar Lagerkvist. Others have been named during courses of the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets at the European Southern Observatory and have not been credited to a single discoverer, but rather collective work. , 175,658 asteroids have been numbered and almost 14,300 of those have been named. 205 have been named after places, persons or fictional figures in Sweden. A portion of these are from the island of Gotland. Gotland is fairly well represented because Lagerkvist has been a summer resident on the island since 1983. The first asteroid to receive a Gotland-related name was 3250 Martebo in 1979, named after a settlement on the island.
