Vui Clarence Nelson
Vui Clarence Joseph Nelson (born 22 December 1955) is a Samoan judge. He sits on the Supreme Court of Samoa, and was the first Pacific Islands judge appointed to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. Nelson was born in Apia, Samoa, and educated at St. Joseph's College in Samoa and Timaru Boys' High School in New Zealand. He studied law at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, graduating in 1977. He returned to Samoa in 1979, where he worked for the Office of the Attorney General and then in private practice. In 2000 he was appointed to the District Court of Samoa, becoming Senior District Court Judge in 2001. In 2006 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Samoa. As a supreme court judge he decided the case of ''Police v Vailopa'' 009 which set requirements for police interviews of child suspects. Patu Tiava'asu'e Falefatu Sapolu
Patu Tiava'asu'e Falefatu Sapolu (22 July 1950 — 28 November 2021) was a Samoan lawyer and judge. He served as Attorney-General of Samoa from 1988 to 1991, and as Chief Justice of Samoa from 1992 to 2019. Early life and education Sapolu is from Vaiala. He was educated at Marist Mulivai and at St. Joseph's College in Samoa. He attended the University of Otago and University of Auckland in New Zealand on a government scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1972. He subsequently worked at the Attorney-General's office, as a temporary magistrate, and as a Court Registrar. In 1988 he was appointed Attorney-General of Samoa. Satiu Simativa Perese
Satiu Simativa Perese (born 1962) is a Samoan judge. He has served as the Chief Justice of Samoa since 12 June 2020. Perese was born in Magiagi, Samoa and educated at Magiagi Primary School. His family moved to New Zealand when he was a child. He studied business at Massey University and then became a newsreader for Radio New Zealand. In 1986 he began studying law at Victoria University of Wellington, from which he graduated in 1989, and he was admitted to the bar in 1990. He subsequently worked for the New Zealand Crown Law Office. In 1995 he became the first Samoan to win a Harkness Fellowship, and studied at Columbia University in New York. Perese was admitted to the bar in Samoa in 1999, and has also worked in the Cook Islands. The Chief Justice of Samoa ( sm, Faamasino Sili o le Faamasinoga Sili o Samoa) is the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Samoa. The qualifications and powers of the office are governed by Part VI of the Constitution of Samoa and the Judicature Ordinance 1961. The position is currently held by Satiu Simativa Perese. History Under the American–British–German condominium, the Supreme Court of Justice for Samoa was established by Article III of the Treaty of Berlin (1889), with the single judge of the court being called the Chief Justice per Section 1 of that Article. The first Chief Justice was Swedish jurist Conrad Cedercrantz, who was appointed in 1890. The Supreme Court of Samoa () is the superior court dealing with the administration of justice in Samoa. It was established by Part VI of the Constitution of Samoa. It consists of the Chief Justice of Samoa and other judges as appointed by the Head of State on the advice of the Prime Minister of Samoa. Judges serve until they reach the age of 68 years, and can only be removed from office on the address of the Legislative Assembly on grounds of misbehaviour or infirmity; this requires a two-thirds majority of all MPs. Acting Judges may be appointed for a fixed term. The court has jurisdiction over the interpretation of the constitution, enforcement of fundamental rights, and membership of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa.
