Volunteer Special Constabulary
The Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) in Singapore comprises volunteers from the general public. VSC officers are imbued with equal powers of a regular police officer to enforce law and order in Singapore. They wear the same police uniform as police officers as they patrol the streets and participate in public outreach events. Previously headquartered at the Eu Tong Sen Street Police Station and Toa Payoh Police Station, the VSC headquarters relocated to the new Police Cantonment Complex in year 2000. History The VSC was formed in 1946 to augment the slender ranks of police regulars immediately after the war, when manpower was badly needed to restore law and order. About 150 men responded to appeals made in the press and formed the pioneer batch of the VSC. The VSC has since grown and contributed significantly in maintaining law and order in Singapore. Toa Payoh Police Station
The Toa Payoh Police Division (or 'B' Division, Chinese: 大巴窑警区, Malay: Divisyen Polis Toa Payoh) was a former police division of the Singapore Police Force, operating from 1977 to 1988. History First formed in 1950 as the Kandang Kerbau Police Station beside the old KK Hospital building (near the present day ''Land Transport Authority, Hampshire Office'') at Kampong Java Road, it was moved to the new Toa Payoh Police Station in 1977 and was subsequently renamed 'B' Division, as part of the Singapore government's effort in providing every new town with a police presence. Toa Payoh Police division was closed down in 1988, with its areas of control taken over by Tanglin Police Division ('E' Division) & Ang Mo Kio Police Division ('F' Division), respectively. Police Cantonment Complex
The Police Cantonment Complex (PCC) is a high-rise government complex located on 391 New Bridge Road, Singapore 088762, next to Outram Park MRT station. It was officially opened in July 2001. Amenities and architecture The design of the building integrates the varied operational requirements of the major offices to create a modern, efficient and user-friendly environment. Each department block has its own distinct identity and yet when viewed together, project a uniform identity. The semi-circular structure at the corner depicts a soaring bird's wing. Maria Hertogh Riots
Maria Hertogh (born ''Huberdina Maria Hertogh''; 24 March 1937 – 8 July 2009), also known as Bertha Hertogh, Nadra binte Ma'arof, Nadra Adabi and simply as Natrah, was a Dutch woman of Eurasian extraction and Malay upbringing, notable for being at the centre of the Maria Hertogh riots as a girl. Riots took place between 11 and 13 December 1950 in Singapore, after a court decided that Maria should be taken from her Malay Muslim foster/adoptive mother's custody and given over to her Dutch Catholic natal parents. A protest by outraged Muslims escalated into a riot when images of her were published showing her kneeling before a statue of the Virgin Mary and Saint Blaise. 18 people were killed and 173 injured; many properties were also damaged. Hock Lee Bus Riots
The Hock Lee bus riots took place on 24 April 1955 in Singapore. The riots started as a result of confrontation between the police, bus workers of the Hock Lee Amalgamated Bus Company and students who supported the bus workers. On 24 April 1955, the Hock Lee Amalgamated Bus Company fired more than 200 bus workers due to their association with the Singapore Bus Workers' Union. As a result, the bus workers went on a strike. On 24 April 1955, police clashed with the strikers, leading to the riots. The riots resulted in the death of four people and thirty-one people injured. Individual Physical Proficiency Test
The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is a standard physical fitness test used by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to test the basic components of physical fitness and motor skills of their members. The IPPT is applicable to all eligible persons with National Service (NS) liability, including Full-Time National Servicemen (NSFs), Operationally-Ready National Servicemen (NSmen, or reservists), and regulars. The test presently consists of three stations: sit-up, push-up, and run. Based on their age, sex and vocation, persons taking the IPPT are required to meet certain standards under the IPPT Standards and Scoring System in order to pass the test. , about 116,000 people take the IPPT every year. Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit
The Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) is part of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) consisting of uniformed volunteers. The volunteering programme in SCDF was first started in 1982 under the National Civil Defence Plan and Volunteer Scheme which provided an avenue through which residents can volunteer their service in civil defence roles within their local community. However, these volunteer residents were not expected to perform duties to the level that of a professional SCDF officer. Home Team Volunteers Network
The Home Team Volunteer Network (HTVN) is a volunteer organisation in Singapore. It was launched by Deputy Prime Minister/Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Teo Chee Hean, at the Home Team Convention on 15 July 2011. The Network is an entity that promotes the implementation of volunteer management best practices for the benefit of Home Team volunteers and is also the key channel through which the Ministry of Home Affairs (Singapore), Ministry of Home Affairs engages its volunteers. The HTVN comes under the ambit of the Ministry of Home Affairs and does not raise funds from the public for whatever purposes.
