Home Team Volunteers Network
The Home Team Volunteer Network (HTVN) is a volunteer organisation in Singapore. It was launched by Deputy Prime Minister/Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Teo Chee Hean, at the Home Team Convention on 15 July 2011. The Network is an entity that promotes the implementation of volunteer management best practices for the benefit of Home Team volunteers and is also the key channel through which the Ministry of Home Affairs (Singapore), Ministry of Home Affairs engages its volunteers. The HTVN comes under the ambit of the Ministry of Home Affairs and does not raise funds from the public for whatever purposes. The Steering Committee The Steering Committee of the HTVN is an advisory body on Home Team volunteer matters. It is a fully or semi sheltered space and can have both interior and exterior aspects to it. Singapore Civil Defence Force
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) is an uniformed organisation in Singapore under the Ministry of Home Affairs that provides emergency services such as firefighting, technical rescue, and emergency medical services, and coordinates national civil defence programme. History Singapore's first Fire Committee was formed in 1855. Prior to this, fires were attended to by uniformed groups which included the police, sepoys, marine soldiers and even convicts. On 7 September 1869, the Governor Major-General Sir Harry St. George Ord enacted the Fire Ordinance and appointed the Colonial Engineer as Chairman of the Fire Commission for Singapore. This Fire Commission was however later disbanded in 1884 due to poor organisation and difficult circumstances. Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit
The Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) is part of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) consisting of uniformed volunteers. The volunteering programme in SCDF was first started in 1982 under the National Civil Defence Plan and Volunteer Scheme which provided an avenue through which residents can volunteer their service in civil defence roles within their local community. However, these volunteer residents were not expected to perform duties to the level that of a professional SCDF officer. In response to the increased threat of terrorism following the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City, there was a growing need to enhance the civil defence capability of the country. In addition, SCDF realised that in the wake of a crisis such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, Nicoll Highway collapse, 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, large scale manpower is required for sustained deployment which will be taxing on its standard regulars. Volunteer Special Constabulary
The Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) in Singapore comprises volunteers from the general public. VSC officers are imbued with equal powers of a regular police officer to enforce law and order in Singapore. They wear the same police uniform as police officers as they patrol the streets and participate in public outreach events. Previously headquartered at the Eu Tong Sen Street Police Station and Toa Payoh Police Station, the VSC headquarters relocated to the new Police Cantonment Complex in year 2000. History The VSC was formed in 1946 to augment the slender ranks of police regulars immediately after the war, when manpower was badly needed to restore law and order. Singapore Police Force
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is the national and principal law enforcement agency responsible for the prevention of crime and law enforcement in the Republic of Singapore. It is the country's lead agency against organised crime; human, weapon trafficking; cyber crime; as well as economic crime that goes across domestic and international borders, but can be tasked to investigate any crime under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and is accountable to the Parliament of Singapore. Eric Low
Eric Low Siak Meng (; 1948 – 3 January 2023) was a Singaporean politician who was a member of the People's Action Party (PAP). He was also a general manager. He contested the Hougang Single Member Constituency (Hougang SMC) in both the 2001 Singapore general election and the 2006 general election, losing both times to Low Thia Khiang from Workers' Party. Political career Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was tasked with the "special assignment" of helping Low win Hougang in the 2006 general elections, along with Sitoh Yih Pin, the PAP candidate for opposition-held Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency. Low and Sitoh were promised more latitude in the Parliament and freedom from being subjected to the party whip if he won Hougang SMC. Central Narcotics Bureau
The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) is a statutory board under the Ministry of Home Affairs and the primary drug enforcement agency in Singapore. CNB is responsible for coordinating all matters pertaining to drug eradication. Its current director is Ng Ser Song. The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) is a government agency of the Government of Singapore under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It runs 14 prisons and drug rehabilitation centres in Singapore. Its responsibilities encompass the safe custody, rehabilitation and aftercare of offenders, and preventive education.
