Voltage, Oregon
Voltage is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It is about south of Burns, on the south shore of Malheur Lake near the Donner und Blitzen River. Voltage post office was established in 1908 by Walter C. Botsford, the first postmaster, who was interested in electricity and thought that the river could generate enough "voltage" to serve the entire Harney Basin. He had confused voltage with power; a hydropower project was never attempted. The post office closed in 1933. At one time, Voltage had a store and school district; today, however, there is little evidence of a once-thriving community. Sodhouse Voltage is about east of the former community of Sodhouse, near the present-day headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. It was originally the site of a sod house built by a group of local settlers around 1872. Semi-arid Climate
A semi-arid climate, semi-desert climate, or steppe climate is a dry climate sub-type. It is located on regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not as low as a desert climate. Narrows, Oregon
Narrows, or The Narrows, is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It was started as a community in 1889 by Lewis B. Springer and Albert Hembree. A post office was established in August 1889 and Springer, the postmaster, named it after himself. In April 1892 the name was changed to Narrows and Hembree became postmaster. Sod House Ranch
The Sod House Ranch is a historic ranch in Harney County in southeastern Oregon, United States. The remaining ranch structures are located south of Malheur Lake in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The ranch was built by Peter French, a well known 19th-century cattle baron. The Sod House Ranch became the headquarters for the northern operating division of the ''French-Glenn Livestock Company'', which eventually covered over . After French was murdered in 1897, the French-Glenn Livestock Company slowly sold off its ranch property. In 1935, the United States Government purchased the Sod House Ranch property to add to an adjacent wildlife refuge. Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary government work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. The CCC was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that supplied manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to supply jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States Robert Fechner was the first director of this agency, succeeded by James McEntee following Fechner's death.
