Volleyball At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Volleyball competitions (beach and indoor) at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were held from 9 to 24 August 2008. Indoor volleyball events were held at Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium. Beach volleyball competitions were held from 9 to 22 August 2008 at the Beach Volleyball Ground at Chaoyang Park. The 2008 Summer Olympics volleyball competitions brought the introduction of the new ball with a new moulding design making it more softened compared to the Mikasa MVP200. Volleyball 2008
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The complete set of rules is extensive, but play essentially proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. Beach Volleyball At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's Olympic beach volleyball tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing took place at the Beach Volleyball Ground at Chaoyang Park from August 9 to August 22. Each of the 24 pairs in the tournament was placed in one of six groups of four teams apiece, and played a round-robin within that pool. The top two teams in each pool advanced to the Round of 16. The six third-place teams were ranked against each other, with ties being broken by the ratio of points won to lost. The best two advanced to the Round of 16, while the other four played two matches (#3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5) with the winners of those two matches advancing as well. The losers of those matches, along with the fourth-place teams in each group, were eliminated. The 16 teams that advanced to the elimination rounds played a single-elimination tournament with a bronze medal match between the semifinal losers. Gabriel Gardner
Gabriel "Gabe" Bryan Gardner (born March 18, 1976, in San Diego, California) is an American professional volleyball player. He is a two-time Olympian, having played at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics with the U.S. national team. Gardner graduated from San Clemente High School, where he went on to the University of Southern California, playing for the USC Trojans volleyball team in 1996–97. Kevin Hansen (volleyball)
Kevin Christopher Hansen (born March 19, 1982) is an American volleyball player. He made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics with the U.S. national team. Personal life Hansen was born and raised in Newport Beach, California. He attended high school at Corona del Mar and was named the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Most Valuable Player in 2000 and led the volleyball team to the CIF Division I Championship the same season. Clayton Iona "Clay" Stanley (born January 20, 1978) is an American volleyball player, a member of United States men's national volleyball team, a participant of the Olympic Games ( Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012), Olympic Champion 2008, NORCECA Champion 2005, multimedalist of the World League. In October 2021, he will be inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, along with Logan Tom and Todd Rogers. Thomas Hoff
Thomas John "Tom" Hoff (born June 9, 1973) is a retired American volleyball player. He was a middle blocker and has been with the U.S. national team from 1996 until 2009. He is a three-time Olympian in volleyball Olympics: 2000, 2004 and 2008. Riley Salmon
Riley Salmon (born July 2, 1976, in Amarillo, Texas) is a volleyball player from the United States. He graduated from Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, and played two years of varsity volleyball at Pierce College from 1994-96 before joining the men's national team in May 2001 as an outside hitter. He competed at the 2004 Olympics and the 2008 Olympics. At the 2008 Olympics, he helped Team USA win the gold medal. In July 2009, it was announced that Salmon faced a four-month suspension by the FIVB for violating anti-doping policy rules. Salmon was taking Avapro, a medication approved by the FIVB for hypertension, however the drug's replacement Avalide contained a banned substance, hydrochlorothiazide. William Priddy
William Reid Priddy (born October 1, 1977), known as Reid Priddy, is an American volleyball player on the United States men's national volleyball team and Italian club Cucine Lube Civitanova. He has also played on the AVP tour from 2000 to 2006. As of 2009, Priddy has resumed playing on the AVP Tour. High school and personal life Priddy was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Ken and Sharon Priddy. Richard Edward "Rich" Lambourne (born May 6, 1975) is an American indoor volleyball player. He joined the U.S. men's national team in 2000 as the designated libero. He has recently played for Delecta Bydgoszcz. Lambourne made his Olympic debut at the 2008 Olympics, helping Team USA to a gold medal. David Cameron Lee (born March 8, 1982) is an American volleyball player, currently working as the head coach for Indian Club, Bengaluru Torpedoes.
