Void Type
The void type, in several programming languages derived from C and Algol68, is the return type of a function that returns normally, but does not provide a result value to its caller. Usually such functions are called for their side effects, such as performing some task or writing to their output parameters. The usage of the void type in such context is comparable to procedures in Pascal and syntactic constructs which define subroutines in Visual Basic. It is also similar to the unit type used in functional programming languages and type theory. See Unit type#In programming languages for a comparison. C and C++ also support the pointer to void type (specified as void *), but this is an unrelated notion. In mathematics, a partial function from a set to a set is a function from a subset of (possibly itself) to . Bjarne Stroustrup (; ; born 30 December 1950) is a Danish computer scientist, most notable for the invention and development of the C++ programming language. As of July 2022, Stroustrup is a professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. Early life and education Stroustrup was born in Aarhus, Denmark. His family was working class, and he went to the local schools. He attended Aarhus University 1969–1975 and graduated with a master's degree in mathematics and computer science. An example would be the conversion of an integer value into a floating point value or its textual representation as a string, and vice versa. Bottom Type
In type theory, a theory within mathematical logic, the bottom type of a type system is the type that is a subtype of all other types. Where such a type exists, it is often represented with the up tack (⊥) symbol. When the bottom type is empty, a function whose return type is bottom cannot return any value, not even the lone value of a unit type. In computer programming, a function prototype or function interface is a declaration of a function that specifies the function’s name and type signature (arity, data types of parameters, and return type), but omits the function body. In computer programming, a parameter or a formal argument is a special kind of variable used in a subroutine to refer to one of the pieces of data provided as input to the subroutine. In computer programming, a return statement causes execution to leave the current subroutine and resume at the point in the code immediately after the instruction which called the subroutine, known as its return address.
