Voices Made Night (short Stories)
''Voices Made Night'' (''Vozes Anoitecidas'' in the original Portuguese) is a collection of short stories by the Mozambican author Mia Couto. The stories were first published in Mozambique in 1986 and later picked up by the Portuguese publishing house Caminho and released in Lisbon, in 1987. Written at the height of the Mozambican Civil War, Couto's stories, which oscillate between the fantastic and the cruelly realistic, are both a painful depiction of a country that has been laid to waste and a celebration of the power of the imagination to transcend the limits of reality. Translated by David Brookshaw, ''Voices Made Night'' was published in English in by Heinemann. Mia Couto
António Emílio Leite Couto, better known as Mia Couto (born 5 July 1955), is a Mozambican writer. He won the Camões Prize in 2013, the most important literary award in the Portuguese language, and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2014. Life Early years Mia Couto was born in the city of Beira, Mozambique's third largest city, where he was also raised and schooled. He is the son of Portuguese emigrants who moved to the Portuguese colony in the 1950s. When he was 14 years old, some of his poetry was published in a local newspaper, ''Notícias da Beira''. Three years later, in 1971, he moved to the capital Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) and began to study medicine at the University of Lourenço Marques. Mozambican Civil War
The Mozambican Civil War ( pt, Guerra Civil Moçambicana) was a civil war fought in Mozambique from 1977 to 1992. Like many regional African conflicts during the late twentieth century, the Mozambican Civil War possessed local dynamics but was also exacerbated greatly by the polarizing effects of Cold War politics. The war was fought between Mozambique's ruling Marxist Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the anti-communist insurgent forces of the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), and a number of smaller factions such as the PRM, UNAMO, COREMO, UNIPOMO, and FUMO. RENAMO opposed FRELIMO's attempts to establish a socialist one-party state, and was heavily backed by the anti-communist governments of Rhodesia and South Africa who supported them as a proxy to undermine FRELIMO support for militant nationalist organisations in their own countries. Magnet Theatre
Magnet Theatre is an independent physical theatre company based in Cape Town, South Africa. It was formed in 1987 by Mark Fleishman and Jennie Reznek who have since been the company's artistic directors. Besides creating original theatre productions, Magnet Theatre is actively engaged in youth development work in the Cape Town area as well as in the Cederberg Municipality. History Magnet Theatre was founded in 1987 to produce ''Cheap Flights'' (director: Roz Monat), starring Reznek. It re-emerged in 1991 to produce ''The Show's Not over 'Til the Fat Lady Sings'' (director: Mark Fleishman), again starring Reznek. The show toured nationally and internationally for two and a half years. In 1994, Magnet Theatre returned to South Africa.
