Voces En Función
''Voces en Función'' (Voices in Performance) was a Puerto Rican singing competition series and Variety show hosted by Puerto Rican singer Lou Briel, televised from 1995 to 2001 on PBS member station WIPR-TV & WIPM-TV. Format The potential contestants had to try out to be on the show, then the ones selected would be presented on the show with two other contestants as well, for a total of three per program and 39 for the series. A jury, composed of all-rounders, selected by cognition, would secretly vote for their favorites during 10 weeks, and choose the 20 semi-finalists. The latter would then compete again in the Semi Finals, separated in two groups of 10, for two weeks, and only 10 contestants would make it to the end. Lou Briel
Lou Briel (born October 19, 1954, Santurce, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican singer, composer, comedian, record producer, pianist, and host, among other things. Musical career Early years with Anexo 3 Lou Briel started his career at a very young age as a singer, director and member of a pop musical group called ''Anexo 3''. Together they recorded four albums, the first two produced by Alfred D. Herger, and reached popularity with songs such as: "Oh, Cuanto te Amo" ("Oh, how much I love you"), "Contigo" (With you), & "Por eso estoy Preso", (That's why I'm a prisoner), among others. For two consecutive years, ''Anexo 3'' won the second prize of the local OTI Festival in Telemundo with the songs: "Tengo Vida" ("I'm full of life"), and "Más Allá de mis Canciones" ("Beyond my songs"). Dark Latin Groove
Dark Latin Groove (DLG) is a salsa band that mixes salsa, reggae and hip-hop. The group was brought together in New York by producer Sergio George (who also signed them to his record company Sir George Records) and included Huey Dunbar, Fragancia, and James "Da Barba" de Jesus. Beginnings Looking for vocalists, Sergio George discovered within the salsa club scenes both Huey Dunbar and James "Da Barba" de Jesus. De Jesus had previously been a backup singer for both Tito Nieves and Sistah Souljah. Their first appearance took place in April 1996 when they performed alongside Sergio George, who took up keyboard. Huey Dunbar
Huey Dunbar (born Eustace Dunbar IV; May 15, 1974) is the former singer of Dark Latin Groove. Born in New York City, New York to a Puerto Rican mother and a Jamaican father, he was exposed to music since his earliest years due to his parents' musical careers. His hits with the band included " La quiero a morir", "Juliana", " No Morirá", "Volveré", "Todo mi corazón", and a remake of Ricardo Montaner's original classic "Me va a extrañar". In 2000, he split up with DLG and since had a solo career which, though commercially successful, has not equaled the diverse acclaim accorded DLG. For his first solo album he was awarded "Best New Artist" by Billboard magazine, and received a Grammy nomination. The album was certified Gold and Platinum by RIAA. Johnathan Dwayne
Johnatan Dwayne (born July 31, 1963) is a musician, composer, and artist who introduced the musical concept of art rock into Puerto Rico. Early years Dwayne was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico the capital city of the island. In the 1980s he belonged to the musical group Words Four Two, singing lead and composing. The dominating musical styles in Puerto Rico at this time were Salsa and Merengue, but the group's release of "Somethin' in the Air" was a hit, and made Art Rock a competing style; this song was followed by "Society Killed by Who". In 1991, after the group broke up, Dwayne composed for others, creating the Spanish version of "Pocket" for Ednita Nazario, and "Metamorfosis". His first gold record as composer was for "Un Corazon Hecho Pedazos" (meaning "A Heart Broken to Pieces"). He won the Tu Musica Award and also an award from '' Billboard'' and ASCAP. Lunna
Lunna (born June 30, 1960; born María Socorro García de la NocedaGarcia de la Noceda is her paternal surname) is a Puerto Rican singer of popular music and jazz who was the director of the television show ''Objetivo Fama'', the Latin version of ''American Idol''. Early years Lunna was born and raised by both her parents in Ponce, Puerto Rico. While in elementary school, she learned how to play the guitar and in 1972, her mother had her take private singing lessons. In the 1960s, while still in high school, she began to sing under the name "Sockey", which was short for her middle name Socorro. In 1978, Lunna auditioned and was accepted in a group called Allegro 72, a locally popular group which included singer Tito Lara and Luis Antonio Cosme. Son By Four
Son by Four is a latin music group from Puerto Rico, well known for their English U.S. pop hit " The Purest of Pain (A Puro Dolor)". The group is now independent, as they founded their own label SB4 Music Group in 2003. Son by Four was created by Panamanian producer and songwriter Omar Alfanno and their members Ángel López, Pedro Quiles, and brothers Javier Montes and Jorge Montes. Currently, the band is formed by the Montes brothers, Javi and Jorge. Music career In 1998, the group released two songs produced by Omar Alfanno, "No Hay Razón" and "Nada". Marian Pabón (born c. 1958 in San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican actress. She also had some success as a singer and recording artist. Biography Pabón grew used to life in the spotlight: her father, Mario Pabón (San Pedro de Macorís, 1930– San Juan, 1996), was one of Puerto Rico’s most famous actors and directors. She was named after him; her family used the name "Marian" as a Female version of "Mario". Her paternal family were wealthy landowners from the Dominican Republic that left the country in the 1940s during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Carmita Jiménez (August 3, 1939 – August 10, 2003) was a Puerto Rican singer who was considered a diva in Puerto Rico. She was born in San Lorenzo. Carmita Jiménez started her singing career at the young age of six, on the radio show named ''El Abuelito Welch'' (''Grandpa Welch'') with another legendary Puerto Rican show business legend, José Miguel Agrelot. Nydia Caro (born June 7, 1948) is a Puerto Rican singer. Early years Caro was born in New York City to parents from Rincón, Puerto Rico, initiated her career in the arts at a very young age while living in New York. She attended James Monroe H.S. where she graduated in 1964. After completing high school she enrolled in the New York School of Performing Arts in singing, dancing, and acting classes.
