Vladimír Šmeral
Vladimír Šmeral (16 October 1903, in Drásov – 15 March 1982, in Prague) was a Czech actor. Life Šmeral started acting in Zemské divadlo in Brno. He moved to Prague and acted in Liberated Theatre, E. F. Burian's theatre and Divadlo na Poříčí. His wife was Jewish, but he refused to divorce her in order to protect her during the World War II. He had an affair with his theatre co-star Adina Mandlová, who became pregnant. In 1944 he was sent to a concentration camp in Wroclaw. Mandlová was sending him packages with food. In December 1944 she suffered a miscarriage. Šméral managed to escape from the camp and Mandlová help to hide him in a hospital. After the war he was active in many National Front organizations, as a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. He became an actor in Vinohrady Theatre and taught at DAMU. Drásov (Brno-Country District)
Drásov is a market town in Brno-Country District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,000 inhabitants. Geography Drásov is located about northwest of Brno. It lies mostly in the Boskovice Furrow, only the forested hills in the northwestern part of the municipal territory lies in the Upper Svratka Highlands. The highest point is a hill at above sea level. History The first written mention of Drásov is in a deed of King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia, Wenceslaus I from 1238. Drásov was known for its vineyards, which existed here until the 19th century, and for the mining of red sandstone in several quarries in the vicinity. Demographics Sights The main landmark of Drásov is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a medieval Gothic church with Baroque modifications. ''Witchhammer'' ( cs, Kladivo na čarodějnice) is a 1970 Czechoslovak drama film directed by Otakar Vávra and starring Elo Romančík. Based on the novel ''Kladivo na čarodějnice'' by Václav Kaplický, ''Witchhammer'' relates the story of the Northern Moravia witch trials of the 1670s, focusing on the priest Kryštof Lautner, played by Romančík, who falls victim to the witchhunt after opposing the trials. The film contains possible allegory about Communist show trials in Czechoslovakia. The film had a limited release in Czechoslovakia. Despite this, it won awards at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in 1970 and is considered one of Vávra's finest films.
