Larks On A String
''Larks on a String'' ( cs, Skřivánci na niti) is a 1969 Czech film directed by Jiří Menzel. The film was banned by the Czechoslovak government, but was later released in 1990 after the fall of the Communist regime. It tells the stories of various characters considered bourgeois by Czechoslovakia's communist government in the 1950s, who have been forced to work in a junkyard for the purposes of re-education. It won the Golden Bear at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival. Jiří Menzel
Jiří Menzel () (23 February 1938 – 5 September 2020) was a Czech film director, theatre director, actor, and screenwriter. His films often combine a humanistic view of the world with sarcasm and provocative cinematography. Some of these films are adapted from works by Czech writers such as Bohumil Hrabal and Vladislav Vančura. Early life Menzel was born in Prague in 1938 to Josef Menzel and Božena Jindřichová. His father Josef was a journalist, translator and children's book writer. Menzel studied directing at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) in Prague. His teachers at the academy included Czech Director Otakar Vávra. Career Menzel was a member of the Czech New Wave cinema in the 1960s. Jiřina Štěpničková
Jiřina Štěpničková (3 April 1912 – 5 September 1985) was a Czech actress. She spent 10 years in prison for an attempt to illegally cross a border. Life Jiřina Julie Štěpničková was born on 3 April 1912 in Prague. She started acting at age 16 when her high school professor Jindřich Honzl brought her to Liberated Theatre. In 1930 she was already acting in the National Theatre. From 1936 to 1951 she was acting in the Vinohrady Theatre. In the 1930s and 1940s she was a lead actress in many Czechoslovak movies. In 1951, she decided to emigrate after receiving a letter allegedly from František Čáp inviting her to West Germany. However the letter was planted by secret service. She was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Her son was sent to a children's home. Her actor colleagues Zdeněk Štěpánek, Karel Höger or Vlasta Fabianová petioned the government to have her released. She was finally released in 1961. After her release she continued to play in ... Naďa Urbánková (born Naděžda Balabánová; 30 June 1939 – 3 February 2023) was a Czech singer and actress. Life and career Born in Nová Paka, Urbánková grew up in Borovnička and graduated as a nurse at the Higher Medical School in Trutnov. After some experience in amateur dramatics, she made her professional stage debut in 1959 in the Pardubice Theatre. After marrying the actor she moved to Prague, where she worked at Magician's Lantern and was part of the CSSPT (the ).
