Vladimir Kovalev
Vladimir Nikolayevich Kovalyov (russian: Владимир Николаевич Ковалёв; born 2 February 1953) is a retired figure skater who competed internationally for the USSR. He is an Olympic silver medalist and 2-time World champion. He trained at VSS Trud in Moscow. Career Kovalyov placed second behind his British rival John Curry at the 1976 Winter Olympics. However, Kovalyov's short and free programs were filled with mistakes and the audience was displeased when the results were announced that he had placed ahead of such skaters as Toller Cranston and Jan Hoffmann. Kovalyov went on to win the gold at the World Championships in 1977 and 1979, and he was also the winner of the European Championships in 1975. While Kovalyov entered the 1980 season as a top contender for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics title, he was clearly poorly trained, overweight and uninspired. 1969 Blue Swords
The 1969 Blue Swords (german: Pokal der Blauen Schwerter) was an international senior-level figure skating competition organized in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. East Germany's Günter Zöller won his fourth consecutive Blue Swords title, defeating the Soviet Union's Vladimir Kovalev and teammate Jan Hoffmann. East Germans swept the ladies' podium, led by Sonja Morgenstern. Soviet duo Lyudmila Smirnova / Andrei Suraikin outscored Manuela Groß / Uwe Kagelmann for gold in the pairs' event. Kira Ivanova
Kira Valentinovna Ivanova (russian: Кира Валентиновна Иванова; 10 January 1963 – 18 December 2001) was a Soviet Russian figure skater. She was the 1984 Olympic bronze medalist, the 1985 World silver medalist, a four-time European silver medalist, and a three-time Soviet national champion. Career Ivanova won the silver medal at the 1978 World Junior Championships. She made her senior World debut at the 1979 World Championships, finishing 18th. Ivanova was 16th at the 1980 Winter Olympics. She was not sent to the 1980 World Championships, however, she received more assignments after Elena Vodorezova, a Soviet champion who had placed 6th at 1978 Worlds, was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. Robin Cousins
Robin Cousins, MBE (born 17 August 1957) is a British former competitive figure skater who was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1980. He was the 1980 Olympic champion, the 1980 European champion, a three-time World medalist (1978–1980) and four-time British national champion (1977–1980), winning all of these titles during his amateur career. He followed this with a successful career as a professional figure skater and later starred in ice shows as well as producing several of his own. The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially the XIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Lake Placid 1980, were an international multi-sport event held from February 13 to 24, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, United States. Lake Placid was elected as the host city for the 1980 Winter Games at the 75th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Vienna, Austria in 1974. This marked the second time the Upstate New York village hosted the Winter Games, after 1932. The only other candidate city to bid for the 1980 games, Vancouver-Garibaldi withdrew before the final vote. Jan Hoffmann (born 26 October 1955) is a German figure skater who represented East Germany in competition. A four-time Olympian, he is the 1980 Olympic silver medalist, the 1974 & 1980 World Champion, and a four-time (1974, 1977–1979) European Champion. Personal life Jan Hoffmann was born on 26 October 1955 in Dresden, East Germany. He is married and has one daughter. Career Competitive Hoffmann's first coach was Annemarie Halbach in Dresden. Toller Cranston
Toller Shalitoe Montague Cranston, CM (April 20, 1949 – January 24, 2015) was a Canadian figure skater and painter. He won the 1971–1976 Canadian national championships, the 1974 World bronze medal and the 1976 Olympic bronze medal. Despite never winning at the World Figure Skating Championships due to his poor compulsory figures, he won the small medal for free skating at the 1972 and 1974 championships. John Anthony Curry, (9 September 1949 – 15 April 1994) was a British Figure skating, figure skater.
