Viscount Portman
Viscount Portman, in the County of Somerset, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 28 March 1873 for the former Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and Liberal Member of Parliament Edward Portman, 1st Baron Portman. He had already been created Baron Portman, of Orchard Portman, on 27 January 1837, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. His son, the second Viscount, represented Shaftesbury and Dorset in the House of Commons as a Liberal. the titles are held by one of the latter's great-great-grandsons, the tenth Viscount, since 1999. The family post-1728 are descended in the male line from a junior line of Berkeley of Stoke Gifford one of whom married the daughter of Joan Portman, the great-granddaughter of Sir William Portman, Lord Chief Justice of England between 1555 and 1557. Sir William Portman, 6th Baronet (5 September 1643 – 18 March 1690) FRS was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1661 and 1690. Portman was the son of Sir William Portman, 5th Baronet and his wife Anne Colles, daughter of John Colles. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1646. Lord William Henry Berkeley Portman, 2nd Viscount Portman, GCVO (12 July 1829 – 16 October 1919) was a British Liberal Member of Parliament. Background Portman was the son of Edward Portman, 1st Viscount Portman and Lady Emma Lascelles, daughter of Henry Lascelles, 2nd Earl of Harewood. Political career Portman was elected to Parliament for Shaftesbury in 1852, a seat he held until 1857, and then represented Dorset from 1857 to 1885. In 1888 he succeeded his father and entered the House of Lords. Estates At the end of the nineteenth century the 99-year leases on the family properties in London came up for renewal, generating a colossal income for Lord Portman of some £100,000 a year. Bryanston
Bryanston is a village and civil parish in north Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour west of Blandford Forum. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 925. The village is adjacent to the grounds of Bryanston School, an independent school. The village was named after Brian de Lisle, a Baron at the court of King John. The Rogers family owned it for a long period of time, and it was later purchased by Sir William Portman, 6th Baronet, who took part in crushing Monmouth's rebellion in 1685. In the 1890s the Portman family built a large country house, designed by Richard Norman Shaw and set in . Since 1927 the building has been the home of Bryanston School. In 1950 Viscount Portman gave up the Bryanston Estates as part payment of death duties. Edward Berkeley Portman (31 January 1771 – 19 January 1823, Rome) of Bryanston House, Bryanston, Dorset was an 18th-century English housing developer and politician. He was the son of Henry Portman, and ultimately a descendant of the Tudor landowner Sir William Portman. Edward continued his father's work developing the family lands in London into the Portman Estate. He was appointed High Sheriff of Dorset for 1798–99. He also sat as Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge between 1802 and 1806 and for Dorset between 1806 and 1823. Pylle is a village and civil parish south west of Shepton Mallet, and from Wells, Somerset, Wells, in the Mendip District, Mendip district of Somerset, England. It has a population of 160.
