Virginia Cavaliers Men's Basketball
The Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team is the intercollegiate men's basketball program representing the University of Virginia. The school competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Virginia has won the NCAA Championship, two National Invitation Tournaments, and three ACC tournament titles. The team is coached by Tony Bennett and plays home games at the on-campus John Paul Jones Arena (14,623) which opened in 2006. They have been called the ''Cavaliers'' since 1923, predating the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA by half a century. Virginia won its first NCAA Championship in 2019, and won the last third-place game ever played at the Final Four in 1981. The 2019 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was a single-elimination tournament of 68 teams to determine the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's college basketball national champion for the 2018–19 season. List Of Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Regular Season Champions
This is a list of Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball regular season first-place finishers, including ties. Notably, all champions after 1961 are considered unofficial by the conference, as the ACC elected to eliminate the regular season title following that season. Since then, the conference's bylaws have stated the sole champion is the winner of the ACC tournament, a rule that remains in place to this day. The conference's automatic NCAA berth is reserved for the ACC Tournament winner. 1976 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1976 Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was held in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Landover, Maryland, at the Capital Centre from March 4–6. defeated North Carolina, 67–62, to win the championship. In doing so, Virginia became the first ACC Tournament champion to defeat three teams ranked by the AP poll on their way to the championship. This was the first ACC Tournament to be held outside the state of North Carolina, and only the third time that a team from outside that state won the tournament (Maryland in 1958, South Carolina in 1971). Terry Holland
Michael Terrence Holland (born April 2, 1942) is an American college athletics administrator and former basketball player and coach. He is currently the emeritus director of athletics and special assistant to Chancellor Steve Ballard at East Carolina University. Holland served as the head men's basketball coach at Davidson College from 1969 to 1974 and at the University of Virginia from 1974 to 1990, compiling a career college basketball coaching record of 418–216. While coaching at Virginia, he was responsible for signing the nation's top-ranked high school basketball player, seven-foot-four-inch Ralph Sampson, who went on to become a three-time consensus collegiate national player-of-the-year as a Cavalier. Following his retirement from coaching, Holland was the athletic director at Davidson from 1990 to 1994, at Virginia from 1994 to 2001, and at East Carolina from 2004 to 2013. Gus Tebell
Gustave Kenneth Tebell (September 6, 1897 – May 28, 1969) was an American football, basketball, and baseball player, coach, and college athletics administrator. From 1925 to 1929, he coached football at North Carolina State University, where he compiled a 21–25–2 record. From 1934 to 1936, he coached at the University of Virginia, where he compiled a 6–18–4 record. From 1930 to 1951, he served as the head men's basketball coach at Virginia, achieving his first championship in just his second year. During that tenure, he compiled a 240–190 record, including a NIT berth in 1941. His 240 wins rank fourth in school history. In 1951 he became Athletic Director. Tebell also coached baseball at Virginia from 1941 to 1943 and from 1945 to 1955. Tebell played football and basketball at the University of Wisconsin.
