United States Census, 1840
The United States census of 1840 was the sixth census of the United States. Conducted by the Census Office on June 1, 1840, it determined the resident population of the United States to be 17,069,453 – an increase of 32.7 percent over the 12,866,020 persons enumerated during the 1830 census. The total population included 2,487,355 slaves. In 1840, the center of population was about 260 miles (418 km) west of Washington, near Weston, Virginia (now in West Virginia). Federalist Party (United States)
The Federalist Party was a conservative political party which was the first political party in the United States. As such, under Alexander Hamilton, it dominated the national government from 1789 to 1801. Defeated by the Jeffersonian Republicans in 1800, it became a minority party while keeping its stronghold in New England and made a brief resurgence by opposing the War of 1812. It then collapsed with its last presidential candidate in 1816. Remnants lasted for a few years afterwards. The party appealed to businesses and to conservatives who favored banks, national over state government, manufacturing, an army and navy, and in world affairs preferred Great Britain and strongly opposed the French Revolution. James Stephenson (congressman)
James Stephenson (March 20, 1764August 7, 1833) was an American politician, soldier and slaveholder who as a Federalist served in the Virginia House of Delegates as well as in the United States House of Representatives. Early and family life Born in Gettysburg in the Province of Pennsylvania to the former Maria Reed (1742-1828) and her husband (also) James Stephenson (1740-1804), the family moved to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) by 1790. His elder brother William Stephenson (1763-1821) would move to Knoxville, Tennessee, as would their mother and sisters after their father's death in 1804. His younger brother Benjamin Stephenson (1769-1822) would move to Kentucky then the Illinois Territory, where he operated a general store and also served as a sheriff and militia leader before becoming a Congressman for the new state. Archibald Austin (August 11, 1772 – October 16, 1837) was a 19th-century slave owner, politician and lawyer from Virginia who served as a member of the 15th United States Congress. Biography Born near Buckingham Courthouse, Austin studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Buckingham County, Virginia. His law office was built on the family slave plantation. He was married to Grace R. Booker and they had three children together. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1815 to 1817 and was elected a Democratic-Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1816, serving from 1817 to 1819 and voting on 88 total bills and resolutions during his time in Congress. He was not a candidate for re-election in 1818. After serving in Congress, he resumed his law practice and was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1832 and 1836.
