Violeta Marasigan
Violeta Marasigan (1939-21 April 2000), better known by her nickname "Bullet X", or more plainly "Bullet", was a Filipino-American social worker and activist best known for her key role in the International Hotel eviction protests which became an important incident in Filipino American history; as well as her resistance against and eventual imprisonment under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos; and for helping establish the Filipino feminist organization GABRIELA and the released-political-detainees group SELDA. She also did advocacy work focused on education for Filipino immigrant children, equal military benefits for Filipino American World War II veterans, and ending racial slurs against Filipino women on American television. In recognition of her years of service to the Bay Area community, she was given the Unsung Heroes Award by KQED Public Broadcasting Co. in 1995. Gene Allen Viernes (August 16, 1951 – June 1, 1981) was a Seattle-based Filipino American labor activist best known for his efforts to reform Local 37, the Seattle chapter of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), and for having been murdered in 1981, in retaliation for organizing against Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda Marcos. Viernes was born in Wapato, Washington, in 1952 to a family of ten children. His father was a Filipino immigrant, and his mother was white. Viernes grew up on a farm and did seasonal labor in agriculture and in canneries in Alaska. Viernes met Silme Domingo through his cannery work and became involved in reform efforts in the Cannery Workers and Farm Laborers Union, Local 7, Cannery and Farm Laborers Union (ILWU Local 37) and the Democratic Union of Filipinos (KDP). Silme Domingo (January 5, 1952 – June 2, 1981) was a Filipino American labor activist. With Gene Viernes, he was murdered in Seattle on June 1, 1981, while attempting to reform the Local 37 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). Biography Silme Domingo was born in Killeen, Texas, on January 25, 1952, as one of the five children of Nemesio and Adelina Domingo. He grew up in Texas and his family moved to Seattle in 1960. Silme attended Ballard High School and graduated with honors from the University of Washington, where he was a student activist. He participated in the effort during the 1970s to save Seattle's International District, and in 1974 joined the Union of Democratic Filipinos ( Tagalog: ''Katipunan ng mga Demokratikong Pilipino'', KDP) and established the Seattle KDP chapter, which organized the first protest in Seattle against the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship. International Hotel (San Francisco)
The International Hotel, often referred to locally as the I-Hotel, was a low-income single-room-occupancy residential hotel in San Francisco, California's Manilatown. It was home to many Asian Americans, specifically a large Filipino American population. Around 1954, the I-Hotel also famously housed in its basement Enrico Banduccci's original "hungry i" nightclub. During the late 60s, real estate corporations proposed plans to demolish the hotel, which would necessitate displacing all of the I-Hotel's elderly tenants. In response, housing activists, students, community members, and tenants united to protest and resist eviction. All the tenants were evicted on August 4, 1977 and the hotel was demolished in 1981.
