Vinton Furnace, Ohio
Vinton Furnace, also known as Vinton Station, is a ghost town located in Elk Township and Madison Township, Vinton County, Ohio, in the United States. Location Vinton Furnace is located east of McArthur off of Stone Quarry Road. It is located in Vinton Furnace State Forest, which gets its name from the town and furnace. The area is open to visitors between 6am and 11pm daily. History Vinton Furnace started around 1854, employing around 100 men. It had a post office that ran from 1854 to 1901. From 1854 to 1857, the post office was known as Vinton Furnace. From 1857 to 1901 the name of the post office was changed to Vinton Station. The remains of the Belgium Coke Ovens, thought to be the only left remaining in the world, are located at Vinton Furnace. They were a failure at the Vinton Furnace site, as the coal available was too high in sulfur. Elk Township is one of the twelve townships of Vinton County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 3,287 people in the township, 1,783 of whom lived in the village of McArthur. Geography Located in the center of the county, it borders the following townships: * Swan Township: north * Brown Township: northeast corner * Madison Township: east * Vinton Township: southeast corner * Clinton Township: south * Richland Township: west * Jackson Township: northwest It is one of only two townships in Vinton County without a border on other counties. McArthur, Ohio
McArthur is a village in Vinton County, Ohio, United States. It is located 27 miles southeast of Chillicothe. The population was 1,701 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vinton County. History McArthur was laid out and platted in 1815. It was originally called McArthurstown and was named for Duncan McArthur, an army general in the War of 1812.
