Villena AV railway station (''Villena Alta Velocidad'') is a railway station serving the Spanish town of Villena in the Valencian Community. Located from the town centre, it is served by the Spanish AVE high-speed rail system, on the Madrid–Levante high-speed rail network. History The station was built in 2013 at a cost of €11.5 million. It has since been criticised for being one of the least-used stations on the entire AVE network, with 25,859 in 2014. Passengers have increased substantially in the subsequent years, to 92,677 in 2018. Madrid–Levante High-speed Rail Network
The Madrid–Levante high-speed network is a network of high-speed rail lines that connects Madrid with the Mediterranean coast of the Levante Region, specifically with Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community and the Murcia Region autonomous communities. The network extends from Madrid to the east, with branches ending in Castellón, Alicante, Elche, Murcia, Cartagena and continuing from Murcia to Almería. When fully operational the Madrid–Levante network will total 955 km of high-speed rail capable of top speeds of 350 km/h in the majority of its segments. Villena () is a city in Spain, in the Valencian Community. It is located at the northwest part of Alicante (province), Alicante, and borders to the west with Castilla-La Mancha and Region of Murcia, Murcia, to the north with the province of Valencia and to the east and south with the province of Alicante. It is the capital of the Comarques of the Valencian Community, comarca of the Alto Vinalopó.
