''View of the Dam and Damrak at Amsterdam'', also known as ''Quay at Amsterdam'', is a 17th-century oil on canvas painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Jacob van Ruisdael. It is since 1910 in the Frick Collection in New York. It is currently not on view. There are two other paintings by Ruisdael of the same scene and same name. One '' View of the Dam and Damrak at Amsterdam'' is in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam; the other '' View of the Dam and Damrak at Amsterdam'' is in the collection of the Mauritshuis, but is on long-term loan to the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, since 1999. The dimensions of the Frick collection painting are 51.7 cm x 65.7 cm. It is signed in the lower right corner. Slive states that the undated painting is from about 1675. Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (9 November 1863 – 14 April 1930), was a Dutch art collector, art historian and museum curator. Life He was born in Dwingeloo and spent some time in Switzerland in his youth due to weak lungs, where he learned German. Seymour Slive
Seymour Slive (September 15, 1920 – June 14, 2014) was an American art historian, who served as director of the Harvard Art Museums from 1975 to 1984. Slive was a scholar of Dutch art, specifically of the artists Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Jacob van Ruisdael. Early life and education A Chicago native and the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Daniel and Sophia Rapoport, Slive received his bachelor's degree in 1943 and DPhil in 1952, both from the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II, starting in his junior year of college, and was on active duty in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. Career Slive was appointed to his first teaching position at Oberlin College in 1950, but soon moved on to Pomona College, where he became an assistant professor of art and chair of department from 1952 to 1954. The Amsterdam Museum, known until 2010 as the Amsterdam Historical Museum, is an Amsterdam-based museum dedicated to the city's past and present. The Mauritshuis (; en, Maurice House) is an art museum in The Hague, Netherlands. The museum houses the Royal Cabinet of Paintings which consists of 854 objects, mostly Dutch Golden Age paintings. ''View of the Dam and Damrak at Amsterdam'' is a 17th-century oil on canvas painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Jacob van Ruisdael. It is in the collection of the Mauritshuis in the Hague. It gives a bird's eye view of the crowd watching the parade of the civic guard on the Dam Square, the main square of Amsterdam. Its dimensions are 46.8 cm x 43 cm. It is signed in the lower left. Based on the absence of dairy farmers in the market, the flag of the House of Orange, and the style of painting Slive states that the undated painting was made in the late 1670s. The painting is catalogue number 6 in Seymour Slive's 2001 catalogue raisonné of Ruisdael. It is inventory number 803 in the collection of the Mauritshuis.
