Video Chess
''Video Chess'' is a chess game for the Atari VCS (renamed to the Atari 2600 in 1982) programmed by Larry Wagner and Bob Whitehead and released by Atari in 1979. Both programmers later developed games for Activision. Gameplay The game is played from an overhead perspective. The player uses an "x" cursor to select and move pieces, rather than using chess notation. If an attempted move is illegal, a warning sound is made and the move is not made. If the right-most switch is set to ''A'' the computer plays as white; setting it to ''B'' lets the player play as white. With the left switch, selecting ''A'' allows the board to be set as the player pleases, whereas selecting ''B'' sets up the board for a regulation chess game. There are eight different difficulty levels, with the computer-player taking a variable amount of time to determine its moves for each level. Read-only memory (ROM) is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM cannot be electronically modified after the manufacture of the memory device. ''Video Checkers'' is a 1980 video game developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari VCS (later renamed to the Atari 2600). Gameplay The game is based on the traditional game of draughts (called "Checkers" in North America). There are 19 different variations of play. Development The game was developed by Carol Shaw when she worked at Atari. Shaw was one of the earliest female programmers, and as such, ''Video Checkers'' (together with ''3D Tic-Tac-Toe'') was one of the first commercially-released games written by a woman. She decided to work on the game because Bob Whitehead was working on ''Video Chess'' at the time. This is a list of games for the Atari Video Computer System, a console renamed to the Atari 2600 in November 1982. Sears licensed the console and many games from Atari, Inc., selling them under different names. A few cartridges were Sears exclusives. ''En passant'' (, "in passing") is a method of capturing in chess that occurs when a pawn captures a horizontally adjacent enemy pawn that has just made an initial two-square advance. Castling
Castling is a move in chess. It consists of moving the king two squares toward a rook on the same and then moving the rook to the square that the king passed over.
