Victoria Shamrocks
The Victoria Shamrocks are a Senior A box lacrosse team, based in Victoria, British Columbia. The team competes in the 7-team Western Lacrosse Association (WLA). The Shamrocks entered the former Inter-City Lacrosse League, which is now the WLA, in 1950. The team became known as the Victoria Pay Less in 1982 to reflect a major sponsorship by Pay Less Gas. The team readopted the Shamrocks name in 1995. The Shamrocks have won the Mann Cup Canadian National Championship a total of 9 times; in 1955, 1957, 1979, 1983, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2015. They have won a total of 21 Provincial Championships. Some of the greatest lacrosse players in the world have been proud to wear the green and white, including Jack Bionda, Rick Brown, Archie Browning, Fred "Whitey" Severson, Geordie Johnston, "Bobby" Monaghan, Kevin Alexander, both Paul and Gary Gait, and John Tavares. The Q Centre
The Q Centre (formerly Bear Mountain Arena) is in Colwood, British Columbia, Canada. In 2014, the arena was named "The Q Centre" after local radio station CKKQ-FM. The arena opened in February 2004, has 2,300 seats and houses year-round events for hockey and lacrosse. With an additional floor capacity of 860 people and standing room area for up to 480, this premier spectator facility can hold any type of event, from trade shows to major sporting and entertainment events. The arena is hockey home of the BCHL Victoria Grizzlies. It was the home of the Victoria Salmon Kings for the 2004–05 ECHL season while their future home, the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre was being built. Gary Gait
Gary Charles Gait (born April 5, 1967) is a Canadian retired Hall of Fame professional lacrosse player and currently the head coach of the men’s lacrosse team at Syracuse University, where he played the sport collegiately. On January 24, 2017, he was named the Interim Commissioner of the United Women's Lacrosse League. He played collegiately for the Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team and professionally in the indoor National Lacrosse League and the outdoor MLL, while representing Canada at the international level. Gait has been inducted into the United States Lacrosse National Hall of Fame and the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame. He was a four-time All-American for the Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team from 1987-90 (including first-team honors from 1988 to 1990), and was on three NCAA championship-winning teams. Corey Small
Corey Small (born March 23, 1987 in St. Catharines, Ontario) is a Canadian lacrosse player who plays for the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League and formerly the Hamilton Nationals in Major League Lacrosse. High school career Small attended Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in St. Catharines. During his senior year at Holy Cross, he helped lead the Raiders to a provincial championship. Canadian Box career Junior Small played for the St. Catharines Athletics in the OLA Junior A Lacrosse League from to 2004 to 2008. In 2005, he won the Gaylord Powless Sportsmanship Award. During his 5 years for the Athletics, Small totaled up 127 goals and 278 points in just 102 games. He would also round up 40 goals and 77 points in 30 playoff games. Mike Kelley Memorial Trophy
The Mike Kelley Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player of the Mann Cup competition. The trophy is named after Michael Edward Francis "Mike" Kelley who was the owner and manager of the Hamilton Tigers lacrosse club in the early 1930s - and later the president of the Ontario Lacrosse Association and Canadian Lacrosse Association. For some unknown reason, Kelley's name was misspelled and perpetuated as "Kelly" until the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame was notified in 2014 of the error by the grandson of Mike Kelley. The Canadian Lacrosse Association and Canadian Lacrosse Foundation were notified during the 2015 Mann Cup series and corrections to the spelling would be made moving forward. Anthony Cosmo (lacrosse)
Anthony Cosmo (born October 6, 1977) is a former professional lacrosse goaltender in the National Lacrosse League. Cosmo is a three-time NLL All-Star, and was named NLL Goaltender of the Year in 2007. Cosmo also plays for the Brampton Excelsiors (MSL) Major Series Lacrosse Senior A Men's league. Cosmo began his lacrosse career with the Junior A Mississauga Tomahawks of the Ontario Lacrosse Association. He then went on to play for the Burnaby Lakers of the BC Junior A Lacrosse League. John Tavares (lacrosse Player)
John Tavares (born September 4, 1968, in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian former professional box lacrosse player and current head coach of the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He is the NLL's all-time leading scorer and also a mathematics teacher at Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He attended D'Youville College in Buffalo, New York. Tavares played his entire National Lacrosse League (NLL) career with the Buffalo Bandits, starting in their inaugural season in 1992. He was acquired from the Detroit Turbos in exchange for Brian Nikula in October 1991. Tavares was also the Professional Lacrosse Players' Association representative for the Bandits. Jack Bionda
John Arthur James "Jack" Bionda (September 18, 1933 – November 3, 1999) was a Canadian lacrosse and hockey player. He was a lacrosse superstar, dominating the sport throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. In hockey he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League between 1955 and 1959, mainly spending his career in the minor American Hockey League and Western Hockey League. Lacrosse Bionda was born in Huntsville, Ontario. From the time he was eleven years old he loved lacrosse, practicing for four to five hours per day. Just before his 19th birthday, Bionda led the Brampton Excelsiors to victory over the Kerrisdale Kerries of Vancouver in the 1952 Minto Cup playoffs. Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century. The game was extensively modified by European colonists, reducing the violence, to create its current collegiate and professional form. Players use the head of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. The sport has four versions that have different sticks, fields, rules and equipment: field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse.
