Victoria Falls Classic
The Victoria Falls Classic was a Rhodesian golf tournament held from 1976 to 1979. Starting in 1977 it was on the Southern African Tour. History The event was played at Elephant Hills Country Club at Victoria Falls, Rhodesia. The course was a par-73 measuring 7,868 yards. It was the longest course in Africa. The inaugural event was sponsored by Meikles. Englishman Nick Job beat South African Andries Oosthuizen in a sudden-death playoff after they had tied on 293. The following year, days after the event, the Elephant Hills Country Club was destroyed by fire, after being hit by a missile during the Rhodesian Bush War. In 1978, the war was still going on but the tournament continued to be played. Southern African Tour
The Sunshine Tour is a men's professional golf tour based in Southern and East Africa. For much of its early history it was known either as the South African Tour or Sunshine Circuit; through sponsorship deals, it has also been known as the Vodacom Tour and the FNB Tour. For the 2000–01 season the tour rebranded itself as the ''Sunshine Tour'' in an attempt to broaden its appeal. A large majority of the tour events are still staged in South Africa. The tour is one of the six leading men's tours which before 2009 made up the membership of the International Federation of PGA Tours, but it offers much less prize money than some of the leading tours, and leading Southern African golfers traditionally prefer to play on the PGA Tour or the European Tour if they can qualify to do so, typically returning to play in Sunshine Tour events a couple of times a year. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls, popularly known as Vic Falls, is a resort town and city in the province of Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. It lies on the southern bank of the Zambezi River at the western end of Victoria Falls themselves. According to the 2022 Population Census, the town had a population of 35,199. Meikles () is the popular name given to Meikles Hotel in central Harare, Zimbabwe, Meikles' department stores in Zimbabwe and Meikles Limited, the company which owns everything including the hotel, the department stores and Meikles' TM Supermarket chain and other retail outlets. Nicholas James Job (born 27 July 1949) is an English professional golfer who plays on the European Senior Tour. He has won five times on the tour. Professional career Job turned professional in 1965 and qualified for the 1966 Open Championship as a 16-year-old. He played on the British circuit, winning two age-restricted tournaments, the Gor-Ray Under-24 Championship in 1969 and the under-23 BUA Rising Star Tournament in 1970. The European Tour was founded in the 1970s and Job finished in the top-100 on the European Tour Order of Merit twelve times, with a best ranking of 26th in 1981. His best tournament result on the European Tour came at the 1978 Greater Manchester Open, where he lost to Brian Barnes in a playoff. Andries Oosthuizen
Andries Oosthuizen (born c. 1954) is a South African professional golfer. He played on the European Tour from 1974 to 1977 and finished tied for 12th place in the 1975 Open Championship. Amateur career Oosthuizen won the 1973 South African Amateur beating Coen Dreyer 3 & 2 in the final. Later in the year he finished runner-up to George Harvey at the South African Tour's Qualifying School and turned professional. Professional career Oosthuizen played full-time on the European Tour from 1974 to 1977. In one of his early professional tournaments, the 1974 Penfold Tournament he made an albatross and was joint leader after the first round, although he eventually finished well down the field. Rhodesian Bush War
The Rhodesian Bush War, also called the Second as well as the Zimbabwe War of Liberation, was a civil conflict from July 1964 to December 1979 in the unrecognised country of Rhodesia (later Zimbabwe-Rhodesia). The conflict pitted three forces against one another: the Rhodesian white minority-led government of Ian Smith (later the Zimbabwe-Rhodesian government of Bishop Abel Muzorewa); the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, the military wing of Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union; and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army of Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe African People's Union. John Bland (golfer)
John Louis Bland (born 22 September 1945) is a South African professional golfer who has won more than thirty professional tournaments around the world. Bland was born in Johannesburg. Turning professional in 1969, he was a leading player on the Southern African Tour for over twenty years. He spent the northern summers playing on the European Tour, where he won twice. He was a more consistent contender than this tally might suggest, as he finished in the top-20 on the Order of Merit six times. After reaching the age of fifty in 1995, Bland played mainly on the United States-based Champions Tour. Simon Hobday
Simon Forbes Newbold Hobday (23 June 1940 – 2 March 2017) was a South African professional golfer who won tournaments on three continents. Amateur career Hobday was born in Mafikeng. He lived part of his life in Zambia and represented the country in the 1966 Eisenhower Trophy. In early 1969 he was still was an amateur golfer and still represented Zambia. At the time, he worked as a car salesman in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. In April 1969, while still an amateur, Hobday played the Kenya Open. In the final round he broke the course record at the Muthaiga Golf Course with a 66 (−6) to leap into second place. Philip Verant Simmons (born 18 April 1963) is a Trinidadian cricket coach and former player. He played international cricket for the West Indies from 1987 to 1999 as an opening batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler. He excelled in the One Day International (ODI) format and represented the West Indies at three Cricket World Cups.
