Andries Oosthuizen
Andries Oosthuizen (born c. 1954) is a South African professional golfer. He played on the European Tour from 1974 to 1977 and finished tied for 12th place in the 1975 Open Championship. Amateur career Oosthuizen won the 1973 South African Amateur beating Coen Dreyer 3 & 2 in the final. Later in the year he finished runner-up to George Harvey at the South African Tour's Qualifying School and turned professional. Professional career Oosthuizen played full-time on the European Tour from 1974 to 1977. In one of his early professional tournaments, the 1974 Penfold Tournament he made an albatross and was joint leader after the first round, although he eventually finished well down the field. In the northern hemisphere winter, Oosthuizen would play on his home South African Tour. He performed excellently at the General Motors Open that November and was tied with Gary Player after the first three rounds. European Tour
The European Tour (currently known as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons), legally the PGA European Tour is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. Victoria Falls Classic
The Victoria Falls Classic was a Rhodesian golf tournament held from 1976 to 1979. Starting in 1977 it was on the Southern African Tour. History The event was played at Elephant Hills Country Club at Victoria Falls, Rhodesia. The course was a par-73 measuring 7,868 yards. It was the longest course in Africa. The inaugural event was sponsored by Meikles. Englishman Nick Job beat South African Andries Oosthuizen in a sudden-death playoff after they had tied on 293. The following year, days after the event, the Elephant Hills Country Club was destroyed by fire, after being hit by a missile during the Rhodesian Bush War. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. 1978–79 Southern Africa Tour
The 1978–79 Southern Africa Tour was the eighth season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline Rhodesian Simon Hobday was the most successful golfer in the early season, winning the first two events of the season, both in his home country. A number of players had success in the middle of the season but it was Hugh Baiocchi, who won the flagship Yellow Pages South African Open, that captured Order of Merit honors. Hobday was the top player early in the season. At the inaugural event, the Rhodesian Dunlop Masters, Hobday was victorious. The following event, the Victoria Falls Classic, also held in Rhodesia, was being played in the middle of the Rhodesian Bush War. Hobday tried to recruit a number of top European players to play in the event but was not successful. He went on the win the event. The ICL International was a golf tournament in South Africa as part of the South African Tour. International stars like Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and Nick Price won the event. The Irish Open (currently known as the Horizon Irish Open for sponsorship reasons) () is a professional golf tournament on the European Tour. The Irish Open was first played in 1927 and was played annually, except for the war years, until 1950. There was a tournament in 1953, but the event was then not played again until revived in 1975. Peter Oosterhuis
Peter Arthur Oosterhuis (born 3 May 1948) is an English professional golfer and golf broadcaster. Oosterhuis played on the European circuit from 1969 to 1974, winning 10 tournaments and taking the Harry Vardon Trophy for heading the Order of Merit for four consecutive seasons from 1971 to 1974. From 1975 he played on the PGA Tour, winning the Canadian Open in 1981. He was twice runner-up in the Open Championship, in 1974 and 1982. Later he became a golf analyst on TV, initially in Europe and then in the United States. In 2015, Oosterhuis announced that he had Alzheimer's disease. Early years, amateur golf Oosterhuis was born in London and educated at Dulwich College. He won the 1966 Berkshire Trophy by a stroke from Michael Bonallack, after a final round 67 which included nine 3s in 11 holes, with seven 3s in succession. The BMW PGA Championship is an annual men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers' Association, and originally called the British PGA Championship. John Bland (golfer)
John Louis Bland (born 22 September 1945) is a South African professional golfer who has won more than thirty professional tournaments around the world. Bland was born in Johannesburg. Turning professional in 1969, he was a leading player on the Southern African Tour for over twenty years. He spent the northern summers playing on the European Tour, where he won twice. He was a more consistent contender than this tally might suggest, as he finished in the top-20 on the Order of Merit six times. After reaching the age of fifty in 1995, Bland played mainly on the United States-based Champions Tour. He won five tournaments in this venue, including four in 1996, when he finished third on the money list. He has also won three tournaments on the European Senior Tour.
