Father Victor Gnanapragasam O.M.I. (21 November 1940 – 12 December 2020) was the first prefect of the Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan. Early life and education He was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka to Sri Lankan Tamil family. He completed his novitiate with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Kaluthara (1959), then the studies of philosophy and theology at Our Lady of Sri Lanka Seminary in Kandy (1960–1966). Priesthood He took his final vows and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1966. He has served in Pakistan as a priest since 1973 and is a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Pakistan. Apostolic Vicariate Of Quetta
The Apostolic Vicariate of Quetta ( la, Vicariatus Apostolicus Quettensis), originally the Apostolic Prefecture of Quetta, is a Latin Church missionary territory or apostolic vicariate of the Catholic Church in Pakistan. It comprises the civil province of Balochistan and the Kachhi region of Punjab, Pakistan. History The areas were originally under the jurisdiction of the “ Vicariate of the Great Mogul” which was established in 1697. In 1832, the Vicariate formed a part of the Archdiocese of Bombay and in 1878 it passed to the mission of Afghanistan, which had been entrusted to the Mill Hill missionaries. Quetta, in the years to follow would be visited by Jesuits (who left in 1935) and then Franciscans (until 1982). Multan District
Multan District ( ur, ), is a district in the Punjab province of Pakistan. According to the 1998 census of Pakistan it had a population of 3,116,851 (1.315 million or 42.2% in urban areas). Its capital is the city of Multan. The district of Multan is spread over an area of 3,721 square kilometres. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lahore is a Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese in Punjab province, Pakistan. Its episcopal seat is the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Lahore. History In 1594 the Mughal emperor Akbar invited some Catholic priests from Goa to stay permanently at his court. This group of Jesuit missionaries arrived in the Punjab and were able to build a church, where they celebrated Christian ceremonies, and receive adults into the Church. It was founded in 1880 as Apostolic Vicariate of Punjab, on territory split off from the Apostolic Vicariate of Agra (now also a Metropolitan Archbishopric). Khalid Rehmat
Father Khalid Rehmat OFMCap (born 5 August 1968) in Mianwali in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi, is the Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate of Quetta in Pakistan. Rehmat worked as a primary school teacher before joining the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. From 2008 to 2014 he taught at St. Mary's Minor Seminary, Lahore. He made his solemn vows in 2007. On 16 August 2008, he was ordained priest in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore. From 2014, Rehmat served as parish priest in Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Sialkot, in the Archdiocese of Lahore. Since 2013, he has been editor of the bimonthly magazine Catholic Naqeeb. In November 2020, he was elected custos of the Mariam Siddeeqa Capuchin Custody in Pakistan. Joseph Coutts (born 21 July 1945) is a Pakistani prelate of the Catholic Church, who served as Archbishop of Karachi from 2012 to 2021. He served as Bishop of Faisalabad from 1998 to 2012. Pope Francis created Coutts a cardinal on 28 June 2018. Biography Coutts was born in Amritsar, British India on 21 July 1945. Holy Rosary Church, Quetta
The Holy Rosary Church, Quetta, Pakistan is the main church of the Apostolic Prefecture of Quetta. From 1937-1939 the parish had as Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Liberius Pieterse, who translated the Bible into Urdu. The parish is also home to some innovative programs like computer classes for the youth. The St. Eugene Computer Center, in the compound of the Holy Rosary Church is run by Oblate Father Maqsood Nazeer. The center offers three-month courses on how to use various programs such as the popular Microsoft Office and Inpage, an Urdu publishing software, for a monthly fee of 300 rupees. It has three computers. The main purpose is to uplift and help Catholic youth. The parish is also home to the St. Joseph Convent School. Max John Rodrigues was born in Karachi, Pakistan (then British India), on 29 May 1938. He entered the seminary in 1957 and spent seven years of his priestly formation at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. Career He was ordained a priest by Pope Paul VI at St. Peter's Basilica on 6 January 1966. Evarist Pinto (born 31 December 1933 in Goa, Portuguese India) is the former archbishop of Karachi, Pakistan. Education He was educated at St. Thomas High School, Goa, India. In 1960 he started studying for priesthood at the St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Quetta. He continued his religious training at the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi, where he was ordained a priest on 6 January 1968. He is fluent in 10 languages including English, Urdu, Punjabi, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Italian, German, French and Konkani. Career Father Pinto taught Sacred Scripture at Christ the King Seminary and from 1987 to 1993 was pastor of St. Lawrence’s Church, Karachi. Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Karachi
St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi, and is located near the Empress Market in the Saddar locality in central Karachi. The church was completed in 1881, and can accommodate 1,500 worshipers. At the front of the cathedral, there is the Monument to Christ the King, built between 1926 and 1931 to commemorate the Jesuit mission in Sindh. History The first church in Sindh, called St. Patrick’s Church, was built on the grounds of the cathedral in 1845 as a Carmelite mission at a cost of 6,000 rupees under the leadership of Karachi's first Carmelite priest, Father Casaboch.
